Aespa (Korean: 에스파; RR: eseupa; MR: esŭp’a, commonly stylized in all lowercase or æspa) is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. The group consists of four members: Karina, Giselle, Winter and Ningning. They debuted on November 17, 2020, with the single “Black Mamba”. The group’s name, Aespa, combines the English initials of “avatar” and “experience” (Avatar X Experience) with the English word “aspect”, meaning “two sides”, to symbolize the idea of “meeting another self and experiencing the new world”. “avagery, in the context of this song, represents an everlasting, never admonished state of existing outside of any boundaries. The first few delicious seconds of instrumental are distorted, ugly, and overall beautifully janky. The members’ highly inflected voices hammers themselves across production meant for a montage of robots being assembled in factories with rapping and flow that is quite above average for the standard K-pop fare. They sound undoubtedly human, but there’s a sneaking suspicion something is wrong.”
