ALBUM REVIEW: Pamphlets – ‘Take Your Place’

Ever since they first broke through with their highly-praised debut EP ‘Flowers For All Occasions’ in 2022, New York’s Pamphlets have been seen as one of the more exciting names rising through the ranks of the US post-punk scene. Blending their distinctive direction with all manner of diverse and varied genres such as indie-pop and alt-rock throughout their enigmatic tenure to date, the trio have been quick to cement themselves as true innovators doing the rounds. And after a wealth of well-received efforts these last few months, they look to cement their recent legacy with the eagerly-awaited debut album ‘Take Your Place’, a record that builds upon their immersive aesthetic of late.

Usually when you utter phases like “post-punk” and “New York” in the same breath, names like Parquet Courts and Interpol instantly come to mind. And while Pamphlets certainly have their fair-share of similarities with those in their field, the ambitious intentions of ‘Take Your Place’ see them take their sound into more absorbing realms than many of their contemporaries. Ensuring that the pace and energy of this new release is always kept as lively as possible, they showcase some of their more inventive songwriting to date here, offering up something new but still familiar for those that followed them from the beginning.

Pamphlets have always managed to create this rich and shimmering appeal within their work, but the expansive nature of ‘Take Your Place’ is a different beast altogether. Moving with this smooth and breezy elegance from beginning to end, they continue to establish themselves as a shining addition to today’s new music landscape.
