America is the debut studio album by America, released in 1971. It was initially released without “A Horse with No Name”, which was released as a single in late 1971. When “A Horse with No Name” became a worldwide hit in early 1972, the album was re-released with that track. The album went to No. 1 on the Billboard album chart in the United States and stayed there for five weeks. It produced two hit singles; “A Horse with No Name” spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart in 1972 (it peaked at No. 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart), and “I Need You” hit No. 9 on the Billboard singles chart and No. 7 on the AC chart. Several other songs received radio airplay on FM stations playing album tracks, including “Sandman” (long-rumored to be about the United States Navy VQ-2 air squadron formerly based in Rota, Spain) and “Three Roses”. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA for sales in excess of one million units in the U.S.

12. Pigeon Song

“Yes, America did grow musically over the years, but when compared to other artists of the same age (or even older!), they were way ahead of the curve and have outlasted most other acts of the same genre (with the exception of acts such as the Eagles, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, Neil Young, et al.).”

11. Here

“This is a great acoustic album. It’s simple arrangements and tight harmonies are superb. This album also features some outstanding percussion work from Ray Cooper.”

10. Donkey Jaw

“This is the debut studio album from long running American folk rock band formed in London, England, America. Yes, that’s right! The band, America was formed in London, England! Ok, their fathers were US Air Force servicemen that were stationed in London long enough for the trio of Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Gerry Beckley to meet in a London high school.”

9. A Horse With No Name

“America timeless first album is a true folk jewel with its acoustic 6 and 12 strings guitars and refined harmonies. The whole stuff here is flawless. “A Horse With No Name” which topped the US charts and peaked at #3 in UK is built with only the same 2 chords from the beginning to the end; but the arrangements inside are so refined and various that you can’t guess it’s so simple.”

8. Clarice

“Well, I can say for sure that this is quite a soft album. And while it lacks bite in a few areas, I’m not sure bite is what America was going for on their first LP. It’s a cozy record by design with good vibes aplenty.”

7. Children

“Speaking of guitars, this is a soft rock album through and through in its composition. Acoustic guitars are the backbone of the record and half of these songs are straight acoustic guitar and vocals, but on the other half, drums, bongos, electric guitar, and bass make an appearance to mix things up”

6. Never Found the Time

“Despite a few blemishes, America’s self-titled debut is a fun record and good music to unwind to. It reminds me of a Bob Ross painting: happy little accidents here and there, but it’s a comforting listen. It’s perfect for road trips in the desert with a vintage Dodge Challenger.”

5. Three Roses

“This is a good album. It’s even better sometimes, because the ease of the songs and the sound of the different guitars can put you in a different state of mind and transport you somewhere else temporarily.”

4. Rainy Day

“This debut record is a very under appreciated acoustic classic that is full of wonderful guitar work and great vocal arangements that are accentuated by beautiful harmonies. The songs on this record are wonderfully constructed with the basics elements. The lack of production is what gives this record its personality.”

3. Sandman

“This album/cd is a must-have for anyone that appreciates vocals and group acoustic guitarwork. The vocal and instrumental blending of Beckley, Bunnell and Peek in the early days of America is unmatched. Sure, the original recording could have been engineered better relative to today’s standards, but there isn’t an average song…they’re all amazing.”

2. I Need You

“What I love about this album is the mysterious spin on Acoustic rock that the band employ. This album really puts you in the deserts and plains the band had in mind when recording the material.”

1. Riverside

“This album is softer than most rock but it is highly recommend that you buy this great album. it calming and cheery it may not be riff but it is still great older rock music and was produced in (1972) any soft or light rock music lover may love it essepecally if they like soft rock music from the early 1970. Some would consider (America the Band) a folk rock band.”
