Bark Songs Ranked
Bark is the sixth studio album by American rock band Jefferson Airplane. Released in 1971 as Grunt FTR-1001, the album is one of the Airplane’s late-period works, notable for the group’s first personnel changes since 1966. The album was the first without band founder Marty Balin (who departed the band during the recording process but without featuring in the sessions) and the first with violinist Papa John Creach. Drummer Spencer Dryden had been replaced by Joey Covington in early 1970 after a lengthy transitional period in which both musicians had performed with the band. The album reached number 11 on the Billboard albums chart (outperforming both Volunteers and Kantner’s Hugo Award-nominated 1970 solo album Blows Against the Empire) and was certified gold by RIAA. An accompanying single, the Covington-led “Pretty as You Feel”, was the band’s final top 100 American hit, peaking at number 60 in Billboard and number 35 in Cashbox. Here are all of Bark’s songs ranked.

11. War Movie
“The rest of the album, well, it’s weak under Airplane’s standards. ‘War Movie’ is right up there with one of the worst Jefferson Airplane songs of all-time. It’s not a bad or terrible song, but under Airplane standards, it’s just not that good.”
10. Thunk
“Thunk is an accapella wordmaze sung by the amazing Joey Covington. “Thunk” is much different from the rest of the album. Almost reminds me slightly of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” for some VERY strange reason.”
9. Wild Turkey
Wild Turkey” is another fantastic blues jam with Papa John Creach soaring on the violin. I LOVE this energetic, rocking, take no crap instrumental featuring brilliantly melodic guitar solos and scorching violin jams. This is just *awesome*”

8. Never Argue With a German If You’re Tired or European Song
“Grace Slick’s experimental, or simply downright strange, “Never Argue With A German If You’re Tired or European Song”, sung in German, finds Slick sounding unlike her throaty self, and more like a purely voiced, and a little tipsy, German barmaid, in a vocal manipulated, quirky sound effects laden, piano driven European philosophical binge.”
7. Pretty as You Feel
“Pretty as You Feel” was the last Airplane single to place on the US singles chart, and it is a memorable highlight of this album–featuring superb harmonies by Grace and Joey Covington, and Carlos Santana on guitar.”
6. Third Week in the Chelsea
“‘Third Week In The Chelsea’ features Kaukonen’s vocals, and it sounds just like a Hot Tuna song. It is much bluesier than the average Airplane song, with a little bit of folk thrown in the song as well.”
5. Crazy Miranda
“Crazy Miranda” is Grace’s cloudy German ode to a kind of lonely spinster that she seems to be praising and mocking simultaneously–it’s the best song by Grace on this record, and her piano works excels here.”

4. Rock and Roll Island
“Rock and Roll Island” has a pretty good vocal melody. It’s a bit strange though, the way it’s written. I can’t quite get into it entirely, but certain parts catch my attention.”
3. Feel So Good
“Feel So Good” is one of those foot-stomper songs. Love the boogie rock style and think it’s memorable enough to have been a hit song. “Feel So Good” is a excellent bluesy number with strong instrumentals.”
2. Law Man
“Law Man” is a wonderful pop song with Grace Slick on vocals. I think you’ll find it instantly enjoyable because it contains one of those feel good melodies that you can put on your own personal compilations (if you were to create one!)”
1. When the Earth Moves Again
“When the Earth Moves Again” reminds me of the classic Jefferson Airplane that we loved so dearly from the 60’s. Just a great piece of writing. “Feel So Good” is one of those foot-stomper songs. Love the boogie rock style and think it’s memorable enough to have been a hit song.”
