7. MTV Unplugged, 2019

Courtney Barnett: MTV Unplugged Live in Melbourne Album Review | Pitchfork

“The second CD for today is also by an Australian. And there is a Melbourne connection because that is where “MTV Unplugged – Live In Melbourne” was recorded – obviously. And it was recorded on October 22nd last year by the marvellous Courtney Barnett. I did not know that they still did “MTV Unplugged” but obviously they do – and this is a terrific record and while mostly acoustic – Courtney has a full band with her. There are 8 songs – quite long – and five of them written by Courtney – the one cover I do know is “So Long, Marianne” and you should to. Paul Kelly – the Australian one – guests on “Charcoal Lane”. I am not sure if there is a video/DVD – maybe someone in Oz could let me know?”

6. Live At Electric Lady Studios, 2016

Live at Electric Lady Studios | courtney barnett

“She is a trip worth taking. If you like Dylan or free flowing lyrics—you will dig her too. A live recording in NYC of tracks off Sea of Split Peas. The mix seems like it could be better.”

5. I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris, 2012

EP1 I've got a friend called Emily Ferris | courtney barnett

“Barnett plied her way through some choice covers as well as all of her first EP, I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris. Her droll delivery was accompanied by her on-stage crew of enthusiastic Northcote locals and it made a really great set. Leader Cheetah came on afterwards but consensus amongst my clique of punters felt Leader Cheetah wasn’t as intriguing as ‘the first band’. Over at the merch desk we all put our money where our opinionated mouths were, all of us bought this EP. Back at home it was good to hear her stripped down style of flat & dry monologue booming from my speakers in the same way that I’d seen and heard her perform on stage.”

4. How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose, 2013

EP2 How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose | courtney barnett

“The one two punch of “Avant Gardener” and “History Eraser” that anchors this EP is some seriously impressive music. I’ve heard a bit of Courtney Barnett over the years but nothing that’s ever topped what she did in this brief golden moment.”

3. The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas, 2013

Courtney Barnett: The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas Album Review | Pitchfork

“Barnett’s lazy singing style really gives this a summer feel. Her lyrics are super clever, descriptive and she tells a great story. I love the music too, the strong rhythms and cool guitars with a perfect balance of melody and distortion.”

2. Tell Me How You Really Feel, 2018

Tell Me How You Really Feel - Album by Courtney Barnett | Spotify

“A change of tone for Courtney Barnett, as she moves into new, heavier and growlier territory. It’s not exactly aggressive, but it feels sort of angstier – it sort of sounds like how the album cover looks, if that makes sense. There’s definitely a tinge of melancholy in here that sort of helps to even off the heavier sound, making it sound like more of a logical successor from her acclaimed 2015 debut. “

1. Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit, 2015

Courtney Barnett: Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit Album Review | Pitchfork

“Good writers have an eye for detail, great writers have an eye for meaning in the detail. This album could be taken at face value as a muddled and messy flow of someone’s inner monologue but there is more to it than that. These thoughts are whittled and sculpted into stories, characters, jokes and by taking the set of songs you understand who wrote them too.”
