Devil’s Playground Songs Ranked
Devil’s Playground is the sixth studio album by English rock vocalist Billy Idol, released on 22 March 2005. It is his first studio album in over a decade (the latest being 1993’s Cyberpunk), and his first new studio songs since 2001 (Idol’s cover of “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” on Greatest Hits). The album also reunited Idol in the studio with guitarist Steve Stevens and producer Keith Forsey. All songs were written or co-written by Idol except “Plastic Jesus”. The album was engineered and mixed by Brian Reeves at the Jungle Room in Los Angeles. Idol and the band supported the album with a world tour of rock festival appearances in 2005 and 2006, including several performances on the Vans Warped Tour. The song “Scream” was used in an episode of Viva La Bam, in which Idol also guest starred, where he and Bam Margera sing it as they go down the highway. 13. Summer Running
“Billy tends to end his albums with something unusual, and here you get “Summer Running”, which starts out soft and then gets heavier than anything else on the disk, before returning to the soft sounds. Pretty good.”
12. Lady Do or Die
“Lady Do or Die” is a good little ballad. It is reminiscent of “Sweet Sixteen” from Whiplash Smile. It fits in nicely on this collection. Especially when followed up by “Cherie”, which is a catchy, hand clapping acoustic number, which oddly enough reminds me of Neil Diamond’s (yes Neil Diamond!) “Cherry Cherry”.
11. Body Snatcher
“Body Snatcher” is a fairly modern sounding tune. It’s okay. Billy then shows off his Doors-loving past, with “Evil Eye”. The vocals off the top sound very much like Jim Morrison. The song then evolves into something that sounds like Alice In Chains.
10. Yellin’ at the Xmas Tree
“Yellin’ at the XMas Tree” is what will likely be considered a novelty song. It’ll hit the airwaves for years to come at Christmas time on your local rock radio station. It’s pretty funny, but by far not the best track here.”

9. Plastic Jesus
“Plastic Jesus” is really catchy and fun, as Billy takes the old classic tune, and revamps it with some new lyrics here and there. Following it is the single, “Scream”- clearly it is “Rebel Yell” pt. 2. It could have fit on Billy’s older albums.”
8. Rat Race
“Rat Race” is very much like old Billy…the song starts out slow and soft, and then rips it up hard and heavy in the chorus. Rat Race is my early favorite with great acoustic verse, then wall of sound heavy guitars for bridge and chorus, then back to acoustic verse”
7. Super Overdrive
“‘Super Overdrive” is a nice rocking tune, which gets things off to a fast start. Billy’s voice is a lot deeper than normal on this song. It’s the only tune on the disk that sounds like that, though.”
6. World Comin’ Down
“The traditional snarl returns for “World Coming Down”, which mixes the old and new sounds of punk/hard rock. .It is nice to hear Billy this heavy without going over the top with this disc.It kind of takes his classic sound and cranks it guitar heavy with a slightly modern twist. “
5. Sherri
“Sherri” is one hell of a good, Rebel Yell-era song. Idol’s voice sounds a little older but not bad at all, he sounds more mature as a writer,I think I like the more seasoned version the best here. Great heavy album!”

4. Scream
“The single, “Scream”- clearly it is “Rebel Yell” pt. 2. It could have fit on Billy’s older albums. He hopefully is paying some royalties to Led Zeppelin for the whole “Lemon tree/ juice down my leg” theme. Anyone looking for deep lyrics from Billy is wasting their time on this one.”
3. Romeo’s Waiting
“Romeo’s Waiting” is very good, with a great chorus. The lyrics on this one could be considered a little cheesy coming from anyone else, but somehow when Billy sings, “I don’t wanna be, another enemy/ Even though you make me bleed like a Kennedy” it works! The song reminds me a lot of “(Do Not) Stand in the Shadows” from Rebel Yell.”
2. Evil Eye
“Billy then shows off his Doors-loving past, with “Evil Eye”. The vocals off the top sound very much like Jim Morrison. The song then evolves into something that sounds like Alice In Chains.”
