En Vogue Songs Ranked

When En Vogue debuted to dazzling, chart-topping effect in 1990, the vocal R&B group attracted comparisons to the Supremes, even though Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, and Dawn Robinson shared lead vocals and intentionally designated no particular singer the group’s Diana Ross. The quartet had more in common with fellow Oakland natives the Pointer Sisters, as they drew from all eras of R&B with convincing stylistic diversions and a knack for recalling the past and sounding current at once. After three consecutive platinum albums and six Top Ten pop hits during the ’90s alone, En Vogue had set a standard by which all subsequent female vocal groups were judged. Lineup changes, lawsuits, and infrequent recordings during the ensuing decades did not diminish the impact of their impeccable harmonies. Here are all of En Vogue songs ranked.

10. Love Don’t Love You (Funky Divas, 1992)

“Just really love this song and have listened to it so many times. It’s all about the way the lyrics and harmonies of En vogue make you feel in this track and that’s pretty damn good! . An absolute masterpiece that will stand the test of time!”

9. Too Gone, Too Long (EV3, 1997)

“Terry and Max’s voice sound great on this toward the end. Terry’s high clear belts and Max’s lower voice with a distinct tone. This song is vocal magic. Shame it wasn’t a huge hit.”

8. Whatever (EV3 1997)

“This video is full aesthetics! Damn, one the best music videos ever created, yet it’s so underrated. The music and video compliment each other so well. EV3 is still my favorite album from a girl group. Vocally, En Vogue is the best! Girl groups of today are nowhere near the vocal prowess of En Vogue”

7. Give It Up, Turn It Loose (Funky Divas, 1992)

“They are all so vocally gifted and so beautiful. I always thought Cindy was the cutest though. They were always in sync with one another too. There has not been a group that has come close to matching them singing, vocal or talent wise. I thought Brownstone was close but that is about it.”

6. Giving Him Something He Can Feel (Funky Divas, 1992)

“Giving Him Something He Can Feel the tune that ends the first side are the words of Curtis Mayfield. How to tell the man that you love that this love is real is a nice ballad for slow dancing and keeping close by touching the one you love.”

5. Free Your Mind (Funky Divas, 1992)

“Coming on the heels of the Rodney King beating, this song came right on time in 1992. A powerful message about social injustices in America. The lyrics encourage us to let down our guards based on prejudice and stereotypes. My favorite lyric “Before you can read me, you gotta learn how to see me.” Powerful message that still rings true to this day.”

4. Whatta Man (Very Necessary, 1993)

“The song is absolutely awesome….but the thing that really makes it stand out to me is how male-positive it is. There’s been a lot of ink spilled on toxic masculinity, but this is almost a guidebook to positive masculinity, describing a man who’s tough, confident and who can make ladies swoon, but he’s also unafraid to be affectionate and caring, loves his family, and he’s not worried about living up to silly pop-culture ideals. We REALLY need that sort of message getting out there right now.”

3. Hold On (Born to Sing 1989)

“This is my jam! There is nothing or no one out there like this these days! This and many others of this era were real deal! The a capella at the beginning is killin any act out here right now and I just love it! These were some of the best days for music… Real music!”

2. My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It) (Funky Divas, 1992)

“My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It) this song recites a love and hate relationship that goes nowhere. What she really wants is respect and tells him he is wasting his time. This is an En Vogue classic. Built on James Brown’s Payback, lyrics are a play on the lesson “fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” If you have a good love in your life, don’t mess it up.”

1. Don’t Let Go (Love) (Set It Off, 1996)

“Just really love this song and have listened to it so many times. It’s all about the way the lyrics and harmonies of En vogue make you feel in this track and that’s pretty damn good! . An absolute masterpiece that will stand the test of time!”
