Family Style Songs Ranked
Family Style is the only studio album featuring guitarists and vocalists Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Released on September 25, 1990, it is their only studio collaboration. In his early years, Stevie often remarked that he would like to do an album with his elder brother. That wish turned out to be his last studio performance, released nearly a month after his death. The liner notes end with “Thanks Mama V. for letting us play.” The album received mixed reviews. Critics praised the songwriting of both brothers, and highlighted songs such as “D/FW”, “Tick Tock”, and “Telephone Song”, while some criticized the lack of their own personal styles, and the songs straying too far from traditional blues. The album peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Here are all of Family Style songs ranked.

10. Hard to Be
“Hard to Be” is fun, upbeat, but with those throaty Stevie Ray vocals that still grab me every time…I never get tired of em! Family Style is a great CD and a poignant reminder of talent lost to us much too soon.”
9. D/FW
“Family Style is perhaps Stevie Ray Vaughan’s last record before his tragic death in 1990. I love Family Style for so many reason’s mainly due to Stevie Ray Vaughan who was expanding his guitar vocabulary further than he had the previous year. Jimmie Vaughan was also at the peek of his career both of the brothers were a good mix between texas blues.”
8. Hillbillies From Outerspace
“This is the king of all good spirited music and at times is quite funny. Though Brothers is musically the only straight blues song- telephone song could easily be considered among Stevie and Jimmie’s best work in blues/blues rock -solo or otherwise.”

7. Tick Tock
“Tick Tock is a departure from the cd but it fit being a soul like song for world peace and love. It is not a long album but if you’re a lover of hillbilly blues or uptempo music or either or both vaughan brothers it really is one of those ”must” cds you here about.”
6. Baboom / Mama Said
“Stevie Ray Vaughan was just beginning to garner the widespread acclaim that he so richly deserved before his death in a helicopter crash in 1990. Family Style was his last studio release before his death, and he probably would have been pleased that on his last release that he was joined by his brother Jimmie Ray, at the time lead guitarist for the Fabulous Thunderbirds.”
5. Brothers
“This album is very up tempo- very Texas and very happy. Brothers the final showdown is SRV and JLV passing one guitar to eachother and going solo. That is an absolute blues song with a lot of albert king like licks and bends.”

4. Telephone Song
“The brothers rock out with “Telephone Song” pulling out Wah-Wah solos and excellent rhythm. Every song has its own way of being a rock gem and you don’t need to be a SRV fan to like this album, although by the end i feel you will be trying to get your hands on any other SRV material that you can.”
3. Long Way From Home
“Long way from home was not a blues song but definetly had blues lyrics with certain image themes like ”crossroads.” This song was covered by Buddy Guy on the same tribute album and the lyrics were set to blues music sounding completely natural.”
2. Good Texan
“FAMILY STYLE by JIMMIE and STEVIE RAY VAUGHN is a true gem of music that was tragically the last studio album that SRV ever did. I think that might be a fact as to why many people might have got it in the first place, but I have always been a fan of SRV and I was looking forward to this album back in the day.”
1. White Boots
“White Boots” has fun lyrics, and shows more of Jimmie’s influence, but it’s not “country” like any country you ever heard. There’s enough SRV in it to prevent that! There is real magic between the brothers, and “Family Style” showcases that magic.”
