Glass Animals Albums Ranked

Glass Animals are a British rock band formed in Oxford in 2010. Led by singer, songwriter, and producer Dave Bayley, the group also features his childhood friends Joe Seaward, Ed Irwin-Singer, and Drew MacFarlane. Bayley wrote and produced all three Glass Animals albums. The first, Zaba (2014), spawned the single “Gooey”, which was eventually certified platinum in the United States. Their second full album, How to Be a Human Being, received generally positive reviews and won in two categories at the 2018 MPG Awards for UK Album of the Year and Self Producing Artist of the Year, as well as a spot on the Mercury Prize shortlist. The third, Dreamland, their first fully autobiographical album (Bayley had said he felt it was selfish to write about oneself), including the single “Tokyo Drifting” which peaked at number seven on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. Glass Animals have become known for their live shows, where they play re-worked, dance-heavy versions of their songs. Their song “Heat Waves” reached number one in Australia in February 2021 and was voted number one on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2020. Here are all of Glass Animals albums ranked.

3. Dreamland, 2020

Glass Animals - Dreamland Lyrics and Tracklist | Genius

“Dreamland is the 3rd album from the English band Glass Animals, and it is one truly outstanding outing that I hope to see topped. I would argue How to Be a Human Being is their best, but Dreamland is a strong and otherwise brilliant follow-up, because it’s chock full of fun nostalgia while also having some powerful lyrics and content beneath the banging beats. I also love how the entire album is structured around {home movies} filmed by Dave Bayley’s mother during his upbringing. The album carries real weight, and while I don’t love every song (Melon and the Coconut is a wee too slow and noisy for my liking), the album as a whole is just great, and a must-own for any fan of GA or alternative music.”

2. How To Be A Human Being, 2016

“Concept album with intimate, often uncomfortable glimpses into lives of others. Gives me an impression of imparting a message of not having to be apologetic for having issues as that’s part and parcel of being alive. Bayley’s stylistic voice delivery and the band’s ambient feel have such a distinctive vibe that seeps in through the pores of one’s entire body.”

1. Zaba, 2014

“Very intellectual and biting in a Steely Dan kind of beautiful bitter pill way. The videos are fantastic. Modern and yet ancient in the power behind the music. I cant really do the depth of this album justice in writing. You must hear it, you will not regret buying this. For such experimental work, it is quite listenable to a lot of different types of people (I have a pet peeve about interesting experimental work that is unlistenable).”
