Hotline Songs Ranked
Hotline is J. Geils’s seventh album, but it might as well be their second or their 11th. Its chief distinction is as a chronicle of the further disintegration of a group which once promised to be counted among the finest white soul and rock groups. Hotline contains not a single track which would break the formula the band has mined since the beginning. Its slickly funky jacket holds an album whose best moments derive from soul and blues classics the obscure “Love-Itis,” which gives vocalist Peter Wolf an outlet for his usual ostentatious wino jive, Eddie Burns’s “Orange Driver” and John Brim’s “Be Careful (What You Do).” The originals are equally formularized: straight blues with soul insertions (the piano lead on “Fancy Footwork,” which is perhaps the best new song here, is lifted from the Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” for instance). HEre are all of Hotline songs ranked.

9. Jealous Love
“THIS is what J. Geils was all about. If you want to enjoy true “Geilsmanship”, you need to stay with this CD. Once Peter Wolf started taking over, things went down hill, as far as I’m concerned. This is driving and gritty, the way blues rock should be. No frills !!”
8. Be Careful (What You Do)
“This band always managed to sound both ancient and fresh at the same time. They were tight enough to hold these tunes firmly together and yet loose enough to allow them to breathe like living organisms. “
7. Fancy Footwork
“While many may disagree, I contend that this is about the only J. Geils album you need to own if you like a pure blues bar band sound. After this they became a more pop type band and as thus are in a different category altogether. “

6. Think It Over
“One of my favorite albums. Very different sound with the harmonica as a lead and the lead instrument. I love Whammer Jammer. Magic Dick’s harmonica skills top those of all others in my opinion. “
5. Believe in Me
“The J. Geils Band to listen to some of the music. I recognized, obviously, the songs from the early 80’s, I was in high school then. I got it to listen to the style of the songs that I never heard before.”
4. Easy Way Out
“This band, although there are a couple of songs that I didn’t like, are an amazing group of guys to listen to! Also, the lead singer, WOW, he talks fast and it almost sounds like a rapper before rap was even thought about! I’m not into rap, or related, but it is pretty cool! If you want a great album, I would consider this one!”

3. Orange Driver
“Totally worth it just for Orange Driver. Damn, what a hot and nasty slab of R & B. Oh and Love-Itis is pretty damn sweet too. But if you buy this album for anything, buy it for Orange Driver. You won’t be disappointed.”
2. Mean Love
“But it is a good start … Great Tunes … Such a wide array of songs and styles is amazing … Well , Peter Wolf is still Soul Rocking and he in a way is keeping the spirit of the band alive ( even if it is own his own ) … Good retrospective …”
1. Love-Itis
“All tracks continue tale after tale, but there seems to be no reason (maybe only one reason is the title) to be recorded like that way. I think this is the unique style of the J. Geils Band.”
