What was the first rock song or artist that made an impact on you?
Nik = Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
Lloyd = Skunk Anansie – Weak
Who are some of your biggest musical influences within the rock genre?
Black Sabbath, The Pixies, The Cure, Queen, The Lovely Eggs, Jane’s Addiction, Rush, Guns n Roses.
Are there any non-rock musicians or genres that have also influenced your music?
Many non rock artists and genres. Artists include: Bjork, Neneh Cherry, Michael Jackson, Notorious BIG, Cocteau Twins, Mr Bungle.
Genres include: Shoe-gaze, Pop, Metal, Indie, Instrumental (to name a few)…
What is your main inspiration when looking to write new music?
“There isn’t one main inspiration, it comes from many different places: lyrics from other songs/poems; stories from other sources (friends/family/news); the mood a demo/jam might invoke; overheard conversations. For example, our latest single ‘Low Postcards’ was lyrically inspired by the mood of the demo. It had a nostalgic and ruminative feel, which conjured up thoughts/memories of things I’m just not able to share with others. Thus, the lyrics where born.”
What do you enjoy most about performing live and do you have any memorable live performance experiences you’d like to share?
We enjoy the exchange of energy in live performance; for us, music is a conversation, we feel privileged (and empowered) to add to it with our musings.
What has been a particularly rewarding moment in your musical journey so far?
Creating our first set of songs together initially. Followed by the release of our first album and going on our 1st tour with Liverpool Legends China Crisis.
How would you define success as a musician?
Begins and ends with your relationship to your music. At its core, it is a muse for self-expression. If this is where you begin, and you’re proud of the result, you’ve won!
What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are just starting out?
First and foremost, artform precedes art (focus on the music you’re making, bringing your song vision to life)…and…a ‘No’ costs nothing.
