INTERVIEW: The Open Flames discuss their origins and influences alongside new single ‘Drop A Coin’
Composed of members of US-based Sleepy Kitty and Harvey Danger (of ‘Peep Show’ theme song) and London’s Say Yes, Do Nothing, emerging newcomers The Open Flames recently introduced themselves to the fold with their dreamy debut single ‘Drop A Coin’.
Capturing a wonderfully rich and alluring aesthetic for their initial offering, ‘Drop A Coin’ makes for a fresh and enjoyable introduction to their sound so far. So we caught up with them to discuss their origins and influences over the years.

What was the first rock song or artist that made an impact on you?
The Animals – the first song Dave learned on the guitar was “House of the Rising Sun” and he hasn’t stopped playing the A minor chord since. He also once went to a house of ill repute in Hawaii called the house of the rising sun, thinking it was a karaoke joint. It was awkward.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences within the rock genre?
Liz Phair, REM, Pavement, Bruce Springsteen, the Stooges
Are there any non-rock musicians or genres that have also influenced your music?
Drummer Evan and singer Dave used to play Dungeons & Dragons, which certainly influenced the imagery of the lyrics and sounds at the end of “Drop a Coin”. Dave was Evan’s dungeon master. Evan had a level 12 magic user.
What is your main inspiration when looking to write new music?
Doing squats in the gym – for some reason Dave thinks of lyrics as the blood rushes to his head, and melodies as he staggers home.
What do you enjoy most about performing live and do you have any memorable live performance experiences you’d like to share?
Making audiences happy, especially when they sing along – that is always a nice surprise!
What has been a particularly rewarding moment in your musical journey so far?
When little kids dance at a gig. That is the most sincere praise you can get.
How would you define success as a musician?
When new listeners hear the music and like it – and like it so much they reach out across the globe to tell you.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are just starting out?
Don’t smoke cigarettes, and play music as long as you love it. Or can’t help it. That may be until you die, so good luck with that, kid. We certainly aren’t ever stopping!
