Kerplunk Songs Ranked

Kerplunk (stylized as Kerplunk!) is the second studio album by American rock band Green Day, released on December 17, 1991 by Lookout! Records. Kerplunk was Green Day’s last independent release on the Lookout Records label, and was also the first album to feature Tré Cool on drums. Kerplunk officially includes only 12 tracks, but the versions released on CD and cassette also include the 4 tracks from the Sweet Children EP. One of those tracks is a cover of The Who’s “My Generation”. Kerplunk was banned from certain stores because of the cover art. The cover features a mostly white picture (with some green added in) of a high school girl with a gun that has been fired. On the back cover, there is a boy lying on the ground with a gunshot wound on his back. Here are all of Kerplunk’s songs ranked.

16. Best Thing In Town

“Best Thing In Town is a pure punk rock piece with a very memorable chorus and a few points where Billie Joe goes atonal with his voice. Green Day fans should not overlook this early issue, even though it’s a tad weak.”

15. Strangeland

“I think of this song as being about the feeling of being high. But then i woudn’t actually know haha. It sounds to me as Billie feels like he’s escaping to another world or something when he’s high, and he likes that place. I like this song because it sounds kinda weird.”

14. My Generation (The Who Cover)

“A cover of The Who’s song, but a very good one, i believe that Mike Dirnt has a little lead vocal on it in the beginning, all very cool.”

13. Words I Might Have Ate

“Okay this is one of the best songs ever! It makes me tremble every single time I hear it. Is just about a girl who loves this boy, but his guy never look at what that girl meant to him. So he kept her waiting- So when this girl stop caring for him he realizes what he had lost. I think is about a relashonship that doesn’t even started. Because he never really care about her… but as time pass he discover what he had lost and he regrets it a lot.”

11. Private Ale

“Actually, Green Day, all of their songs, are relatable at any age. Take Insomniac, that whole album is about being somewhat pissed off, and correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t everyone pissed off at some point? The only difference between new Green Day and old is that the newer songs are relatable on more then just the outer shell of emotions.”

10. Dominated Love Slave

“Brilliant song! Possibly one of the most funniest songs! Tre has severe issues! lol! I think the meaning of the song is pretty straight forward! But it still rocks!! Tre makes some great songs!!”

9. Sweet Children

“Possibly their best EP out of the first three and their most fun. This might be the objectively fastest we ever hear Green Day. The lyrics aren’t all entirely lovey dovey like 1000 hours which definitely makes it less… uncomfortable to listen to. I enjoy their pre-Dookie work but their balance between pop and punk in conjunction with the song matter itself definitely started to get better there and form the Green Day sound as we know it. Not with their early work.”

8. One of My Lies

“ounds like he realizes his existence as a human is much smaller than he previously realized. Then he speculates on death, whether there is life after death. He rejects anyone answering him, because who has seen what is after death? Much like Ecclesiastes. He goes into religion a little bit at the end where he mentions that he “used to pray at night”. We can infer that he didn’t know why he was praying at the time nor now knows why people pray, through his final question, “why?”. Instead he realizes he prayed only because his parents taught him to, and in addition questions their reasons.”

7. 80

“I figured that the 80 part was just to emphasise the theme of going insane. The way he says it very fast you know, I thought it was about how his girlfriend is driving him crazy. Not as in making him angry, just making him think weirdly.”

6. Christie Road

“This song definately combines the amazing aspects of a ballad and punk song together in one. The lyrics help make that transition too. In the beginning half of the song, it’s about boredom, having no where exciting to go and wanting to go to “Christie Road” (which I suspect is a metaphor for some kind of place BJ wants to go to?) and then as soon as the song picks up some speed and intensity, BJ is now saying “If there’s one thing that I need That makes me feel complete So I go to Christie Road It’s home…” as if he made it to the place he wanted to go to. Did that make sense? Anyways, it’s one of Green Day’s greatest songs and is even more incredible live!”

5. No One Knows

“This has got to be one of my fave Green Day songs, to listen and play. I agree its about not wanting you or your friends to grow up. But also about being misunderstood. The chorus makes me think of a person who’s dismissed as being all these things (irrisponsible, habitual) but really, they feel “no one knows” them. I can relate to that.”

4. One for the Razorbacks

“The meaning of this song is so obvious. It’s obviously about a girl who has been hurt before, and some guy wants her and he’s trying to get it to her that he isn’t going to do anything that will make her upset or hurt her.”

3. Welcome to Paradise

“I always thought that this song was about him going off to college. He’s left his home and moved off to college and he is unsure of himself and his new surroundings. The whole slums thing is about how most parents think that college housing is slums but the teenagers see it as paradise. I dunno, that’s just what i always thought he was talking about.”

2. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?

“The song is amazing,as well as the book in which is based on. Is a very good description of Holden Caulfield, and most of the teenagers. We feel confused, we try our best to improve our faults, and we feel frustrated if we keep failing. Is all about trying and not being able to move forward. To be stuck in some determinated point.”

1. 2000 Light Years Away

“This song is about how much in love Billie Joe was. It’s that whole sensation of being able to hear her laugh and see her smile, regardless of where in the world she is. So in a way, it’s really showing that long distance relationships can work if it’s truly meant to be. Great song by a historical band, in my opinion.”
