Lauren Ash pays tribute to riot grrrl roots with raw cover of 7 Year Bitch’s ‘The Scratch’
Singer and multi-instrumentalist Lauren Ash has released a blistering new cover of ‘The Scratch’, a visceral homage to the feminist punk energy that first lit her creative fire. Originally performed by Seattle punk icons 7 Year Bitch and featured in the 1995 cult film Mad Love, the track carries deep personal significance for Ash.
“I remember the exact moment I knew I wanted to be in a band,” she shares. “It was watching that scene in Mad Love, seeing an all-female punk band just tear it up. I’d never seen women perform like that before. That was it — I knew.”
Ash’s version doesn’t polish or prettify the original, it embraces the grit. Recorded with a one-take vocal and unfiltered urgency, this cover is as raw and unapologetic as punk should be. The result is a straight shot of messy, aggressive catharsis that stays true to the riot grrrl spirit.
