Long Distance Voyager Songs Ranked
Long Distance Voyager is the tenth album by the Moody Blues, first released in May 1981 on the group’s Threshold record label. It was the group’s first album featuring keyboardist Patrick Moraz (who previously had worked with bands such as Refugee and Yes) in place of co-founder Mike Pinder, who left after Octave in 1978. Upon release in 1981, Long Distance Voyager became the Moody Blues’ second American number one album, and was also the source of the Top 20 singles “Gemini Dream” (#12) and “The Voice” (#15). It also continued their winning streak in their native United Kingdom, reaching #7 there. In November 2008, the album was remastered and released on CD with one extra track. Here are all of Long Distance Voyager’s songs ranked.

10. Meanwhile
“The second side of the vinyl began with “Meanwhile,” another medium Justin rocker, which is carried along mostly by his acoustic guitars, then Ray & Graeme take over. “Meanwhile” is carried along mostly on acoustic strumming, but John’s bass emphsizes the lines.”
9. Nervous
“John’s “Nervous” is probably the weakest song in the whole set. It features his weak, thin, voice and lots of strings. It sets the mood. however, for Ray to take over and finish the album with a bang.”
8. Reflective Smile
“This is a welcome addition to any classic rock collection or music enthusiast’s in general. Great place to get to know the Moodies. Highly recommended but make sure and get this remastered version as the original cd release’s sound is much inferior.”

7. Veteran Cosmic Rocker
“Pat does some great synth noodling behind Ray, and then the whole thing crashes into “Veteran Cosmic Rocker. The juxtaposition of “Veteran Cosmic Rocker” as an entertainer next to clown entertainers was not an accident. The most poignant line is from “Veteran Cosmic Rocker” where Ray sings: “He’s the VETERAN COSMIC ROCKER.”
6. In My World
“In My World” is a ballad with muscle that builds from from solo guitar to strings and that Moody chorale without ever getting wimpy. Highly entertaining album. Although a little draggy at over 7 minutes long, “In My World” is also a very strong track.”
5. Painted Smile
“‘Painted smile’ is a familiar theme for Ray. It seems like a happy go lucky buncy song, much in the vain of ‘Carousel’ from his solo album. However, if one looks at the lyrics, it is a really deep song. Fantastic music and an interesting arrangement, away from the acoustic rhythm, bass, drums approach.”

4. 22,000 Days
“With the next song, Ray Thomas, who was absent form the first side, makes his voice felt. He and John Lodge sing Graeme Edge’s “22,000 days,” a thumping rumination on the life of Man. Justin’s lead is all over this one, and there is a synthsized harmonica from Ray (no one plays harp any more) that sets the whole piece off.”
3. Gemini Dream
“Then the synth’d bass of the first hit, “Gemini Dream,” kicks in and we are running again. Justin and John began writing together for the Blue Jays album and have continued ever since.”
2. Talking Out of Turn
“John’s “Talking out of Turn,” one of his best, follows, and slows the pace, with orchestra giving punch to the song. One of their best rockers.”Talking Out Of Turn” has a more percussive mid tempo soul/folk flavor with very grand strings and bleeping synth bass.”
1. The Voice
“The Voice is a great upbeat song about getting in touch with yourself, and talking out of turn is a good song about relationships, but previous reviews hit the nail on the head when they said that Nervous is the best song on the album. “
