Loverboy Albums Ranked

Loverboy is a Canadian rock band formed in 1979 in Calgary, Alberta. Loverboy’s hit singles, particularly “Turn Me Loose” and “Working for the Weekend”, have become arena rock staples and are still heard on many classic rock and classic hits radio stations across Canada and the United States. The band is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. After being rejected by many American record labels, they signed with Columbia/CBS Records Canada and began recording their first album on March 20, 1980. Loverboy’s founding members were lead singer Mike Reno, guitarist Paul Dean, keyboardist Doug Johnson, bassist Scott Smith, and drummer Matt Frenette. Throughout the 1980s, Loverboy accumulated numerous hit songs in Canada and the United States, earning four multi-platinum albums and selling millions of records. Except for a brief breakup from 1988 to 1991, the band has continued to perform live shows regularly. Here are all of Loverboy albums ranked.

10. Unfinished Business (2014)

“This album is an excellent comeback after a long drought by Loverboy. If you are a fan of classic Loverboy, then this album is for you. Six of the ten songs are basically in the Loverboy mold. The first track, “Fire me up,” gets the album off to a great and rousing start. It seems good enough to have been on any of Loverboy’s first 2-3 albums. The 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, and 10th tracks also seem to be infused with the same early Loverboy energy, style, and tempo.”

9. Rock ‘N’ Roll Revival (2012)

” These songs sound more heavier and Fuller than original Recordings, and the new tracks are pretty cool. Hey If you where a fan back in the Day, Then Don’t wait, go ahead and pick this one up, Great Job Loverboy, Sounds really Good, Great Songs to Jam in Your Car Fun Fun Fun”

8. Big Ones (1989)

“‘Big Ones’ is probably one of the better examples of what 80’s rock & roll was all about. Who could forget ‘Workin’ For The Weekend’ (a blue-collar anthem to this day) and ‘The Kid Is Hot Tonight’ and gosh, all the rest–fantastic bubble-gum harder than average pop-rock music.”

7. Keep It Up (1983)

“This album is awesome. Slightly more of a pop sound than before but still a great album. The keyboards sound wonderful. I seen them in concert back in 1996 and they still rocked the house. Let’s all get together and bring back good rock music!”

6. Lovin’ Every Minute Of It (1985)

“This album well saps the core of the 80s American pop and hard rock during mid 80s and could be the memorable piece of work countering well with Survivor’s Vital Signs, Starship’s Knee Deep In A Hoopla, Heart and Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi. Huge influence from the bands they toured with during their American live tours during the past enabled them to keep the track of what is hot in American rock then.”

5. Wildside (1987)

“Of all the Loverboy CDs this is my favorite one. All of the songs rock. The best songs from this cd are “Love Will Rise Again”, “Notorious”, “Hometown Hero” & “Wildside”. Why it wasn’t as successful as their earlier CDs is a wonder. Loverboy was one of my favorite groups of the ’80s. With the hits like “Turn Me Loose”, “Hot Girls In Love”, “Queen Of The Broken Hearts” & “Working For The Weekend” they had their place in 80’s rock.”

4. Classics (1994)

“Some bands explode at you, others rock heavy metal, then there’s those in between, seeking rhythm and melody for an excellent listening while working or driving. LoverBoy, along with The Cars, and similar bands, achieve this measure easily. Rock with generous abundance of commentary on beautiful girls, and mutual feelings. Nice album is you like their Canadian blend.”

3. Just Getting Started (2007)

“This is without a doubt Loverboy’s best album in decades. It’s really a shame that there couldn’t have been any worldwide promotion for this album, because it has a lot of songs that are of hit potential quality.Just listen to the first single The One That Got Away, and you immediately say to yourself, how can this song not be all over the radio? Also songs like Fade To Black,The Real Thing,As Good As It Gets,One Of Them Days,Just Getting Started, and my second favorite song on this album,Lost In You,really give you an idea of how good this thing really is.”

2. Loverboy (1980)

“Loverboy’s self titled debut album is one of the strongest debut albums that I have ever heard. I have to rank it up there with “Boston” and “The Cars” debut albums. The Kid is Hot Tonite gets things going, an excellent rocker to open the album with. Then the big hit Turn Me Loose is on. The whole first half is flawless, really the whole album is flawless. Although you may only know The Kid is Hot Tonite and Turn Me Loose from the radio, other songs like Always on My Mind, Lady of the 80s, Little Girl, Prissy Prissy, Teenage Overdose,DOA, and It Don’t Matter are just as strong. This is where you should start your Loverboy collection.”

“Musically, the album is strong. Great songs, and great production. The keyboards are sometimes a bit cheesy… but when Johnson sticks to adding foundation to the songs… it really works well. (2017 edit: his keyboard work is VERY good. I have a lot of respect for his contributions. I’ve been re-listening and he does add a lot to the songs. The intro to WHEN ITS OVER and TAKE ME TO THE TOP are the cheesy sounds I was referring to previously.”
