11. Soldier Side

“Intro” is a short but nice little melodic introduction for not just this album but the entire Mezmerize/Hypnotize pairing. It’s very dark and melancholic sounding, which is a big contrast to most of the rest of the album. We will meet this song again in full-length form on the next album.”

10. This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I’m on This Song

“This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I’m on This Song” is probably the worst track on this album. It’s very much like Steal This Album! in a way where it’s just straight up filler and nothing more or less.”

9. Old School Hollywood

“Old School Hollywood” is perhaps the most experimental track off the album. It’s a lot more synthesizer driven than any other SOAD song I’ve ever heard. Serj does this weird vocal effect that makes him sound like a robot while Daron gleefully sings about irrelevant celebrities going to a baseball game. It’s very different than the rest of the album for sure, but it manages to fit right in.”

8. Cigaro

“Cigaro” is probably the only time in any rock song where the lines “MY COCK IS MUCH BIGGER THAN YOURS! MY COCK CAN WALK RIGHT TROUGH THE DOOR!” can sound fun and appealing. The funny lyrics mixed in with Serj’s slick vocals and the band’s ferocious playing make this a guilty pleasure track. Oh God, did I just put “cock” and “pleasure” in the same paragraph? Nice.”

7. Violent Pornography

“Violent Pornography” quickly brings back the fun with it’ repetitive, rolling verses and it’s “dancey” guitar riffs. Yes, this it the type of song that doesn’t require “opening this fucking pit up” but more like “can we install a dance floor inside this so call pit?”. Me and my friends back in high school would have a blast listening to this song and trying to sing the lyrics. Good times”

6. Revenga

“Revenga” rolls right off of “B.Y.O.B.”‘s heels with a more mid-tempo pace. Remember earlier on when I described Serj’s vocals as “operatic”? Well they’re even more operatic here! Mixed in with a fast clean style and Daron’s kinda high pitched yet melodic clean style. Serj is actually much more tame here than on earlier System albums or even on some of his later solo works. “

5. Sad Statue

“Sad Statue” is another weak filler track on the album. Definitely not one of their best protest songs but they carry the meaning well enough to at least make it more listenable than “The Cocaine Song” I mentioned earlier.”

4. Radio/Video

“Radio/Video” opens with a nice sounding fast, but clean guitar riff that is then accompanied by what I can only describe as an “accordion sounding instrument that may or may not be an actual accordion” before descending into a fast hard rock chorus leading into mid-tempo clean verses. This track really embodies what direction the band was taking on this album, as well as on Hypnotize.”

3. Lost in Hollywood

“The album closes with “Lost in Hollywood”. If “Old School Hollywood” is about the fun side of fame, then “Lost in Hollywood” is the complete opposite. Daron playing clean, yet mournful guitar chords and singing about a washed up actor/actress is a very beautiful moment in the band’s discography. A great closer for sure.”

2. Question!

“Question!” is another personal favorite on this album. The melodic acoustic guitar mixed in with the fast distorted guitar and the almost gothic sounding atmosphere really make it so for me. Some of Serj’s best vocals on the album appear here. Very intense, yet somewhat beautiful at the same time.”

1. B.Y.O.B.

“B.Y.O.B.” is the first full-length song to start off the album. Unlike the preceding intro, this is a very fast-paced hard rocker with amazing guitar riffs and Serj’s operatic vocals accompanying Daron’s screams. It’s very in-your-face while knowing when to take a break. That break being in the groovy, catchy hooks.”
