REVIEW: badsoma – ‘kicking and screaming’
Over these last few months, LA’s badsoma have been busy crafting a distinctive direction to call their own. Adopting a wonderfully warm and woozy aesthetic, the band have been quick to cement themselves on their local scene as they look to take influence from the likes of Japanese Breakfast, Wilco, and Radiohead. And after plenty of innovation and self-discovery recently, they are now introducing themselves to the wider world with their eagerly-awaited debut EP ‘kicking and screaming’.
Delving deep within that rich and rustic appeal they have been cultivating recently, ‘kicking and screaming’ sees them kicking things off in wondrous form here. Offering up some wonderfully serene grooves that perfectly harmonise with their haunting vocal performance, this five-track collection sees them open themselves up as one of the more endearing names emerging right now. Tracks like ‘The Stranger’ and ‘burn out’ illustrate their progressive intent of late, elevating those broad and immersive textures they have been developing over recent months.
They may still be very much in their infancy right now, but ‘kicking and screaming’ showcases some incredibly absorbing and promising ideas at every turn. Creating this brilliantly lofty atmosphere as it plays, badsoma are certainly ones to keep a firm eye on for the years ahead as well.
