REVIEW: Deep Sea Camels – ‘This Is Where We Are Now’
Ever since they first broke through with their brilliant debut single ‘Incidentally’ in 2022, Deep Sea Camels have been on an extremely prolific run of form. Turning out a shining array of indie-rock anthems as often as possible, their reputation for taking those classic rhythms and rebranding them for themselves has earned them a myriad of support in recent years, most notably for their debut LP ‘Cheapside And Kings’ last year. But with their prominence continuing to grow thanks to their recent outings ‘How To Be Happy’ and ‘That’s What I’m Told’, they are back once again to deliver their eagerly-awaited sophomore album ‘This Is Where We Are Now’.
Sounding like a combination of The Hold Steady and The Velvet Underground in places, ‘This Is Where We Are Now’ looks to highlight their more ambitious tendencies of late. With each track following its own unique path through both sonic inspiration and genre, their newest collection is a bold and captivating return to form for the group. Whether it is looking to kick out some fiery riffs or lure you in with some more tender lyrical moments, Deep Sea Camels take on each of these new challenges with flair and gusto from beginning to end.
Despite only a couple of years since their initial offerings, Deep Sea Camels have grown into this wildly adventurous group that never seems to explore the same idea twice. Brimming with this inventive spirit as it plays, ‘This Is Where We Are Now’ feels like the beginning of something new and interesting for them, a direction that will no doubt serve them very well in the years ahead as well.
