REVIEW: Lateral – ‘Entrance’

Some debut collections arrive with intent, while others kick the door open with restless emotion and ringing guitars. ‘Entrance’, the first EP release from Lateral, firmly belongs in the latter category; delivering a vibrant, emotionally-charged collection that taps into the spirit of classic Midwest emo while injecting it with a modern spark of urgency and personality.

From the opening moments, ‘Entrance’ feels alive with momentum. The band embrace the raw sincerity that defined the emo and indie underground scenes of the early 2000s, but they avoid sounding trapped in the past. Instead, they reinterpret those influences with a playful intensity that feels fresh and exciting.

What gives the EP its real emotional power, however, is the honesty behind the songwriting. Lateral dig deep into themes of self-reflection, personal growth, and the uncomfortable realisation that sometimes we’re our own biggest obstacle. But rather than masking these moments with irony or detachment, the band confront them head-on, turning self-doubt and introspection into something exhilarating.

One of the most striking examples arrives in ‘Fruit Bearing Yields’. At first glance, the track looks to explore the awkward guilt that comes from receiving a present that doesn’t quite land the way it should. But the song quickly evolves into something far more revealing. Beneath that everyday scenario lies a deeper exploration of self-awareness and the nagging frustration that comes from recognising the ways we fall short of our own expectations. Lateral transform that uncomfortable feeling into a burst of melodic urgency, pairing thoughtful lyricism with guitar-driven energy that surges forward with conviction.

Another standout moment is opener ‘Phenomenal Realization’, which captures the overwhelming sensation of life spinning slightly out of control. The imagery of something left unattended, quietly bubbling over while attention is elsewhere, becomes a striking metaphor for the chaos that can build when responsibilities pile up. Musically, the band mirror that emotional pressure with dynamic shifts and explosive instrumentation, creating a track that feels as breathless and frantic as the thoughts it describes.

Throughout ‘Entrance’, Lateral demonstrate a remarkable ability to balance emotional vulnerability with exhilarating musical momentum. The guitars shimmer and crash in equal measure, melodies soar unexpectedly, and the vocal delivery carries a sincerity that makes every moment feel authentic. There’s a sense of catharsis running through the entire project, as though the band are using music as a way to process confusion, frustration, and ultimately personal transformation.

Here, Lateral prove that emotionally driven guitar music is far from fading away. If anything, they breathe new life into it, delivering an introduction packed with heart, energy, and a fearless willingness to turn personal reflection into something electrifying.
