REVIEW: Vast Robot Armies – ‘Somewhere In The Middle’
Over this past decade, innovative psych-rock outfit Vast Robot Armies have always been seen as one of the more imaginative names on the scene. Creating this brilliantly heady mix of driven guitar grooves and a more atmospheric approach to production has earned them countless praise and acclaim over the years, building upon what has already been some truly immersive moments within their tenure. And now they look to heighten one of their more impactful releases ‘Somewhere In The Middle’, a riveting two-track offering brimming with power at every turn.
While just two tracks in length does leave you wanting more by the time it’s over, ‘Somewhere In The Middle’ still manages to pack plenty of bite within its eight-minute runtime. With the opener ‘Dinner Music (Redeux)’ offering up more of that euphoric psychedelic energy they are known for, its sophomore cut ‘Sound Of Japan’ feels far more lucid in its production and songwriting, making this sweetly short release as broad and diverse as possible.
Vast Robot Armies have certainly been on a formidable run over the years, but ‘Somewhere In The Middle’ still stands as one of their more powerful releases in their sprawling catalogue to date. Brimming with this fascinating allure that ebbs and flows as often as possible, they are continuing their pursuit of brilliantly adventurous and inventive ideas here.
