Skindred Albums Ranked

Skindred is a Welsh heavy metal band formed in Newport in 1998. Their musical style mixes heavy metal, alternative rock, and reggae. The band also integrates elements of punk rock, hardcore punk, reggae, dancehall, jungle, ska, hip hop, drum and bass, dubstep, and various other influences into their music. They are well known for their energetic and involving live performances, and have won several awards including “Best Live Band” at the 2011 UK Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and the “Devotion Award” at the 2011 Kerrang! Awards. Skindred fuses heavy metal, punk rock, hip hop, electronica, and reggae influences to create a unique style and sound. The band has previously referred to this style as “Ragga metal”. Benji Webbe has also jokingly referred to the band’s musical style as “nu-reggae”, in reference to the term nu-metal. Although Skindred has sometimes been compared to Bad Brains, Webbe states that “To someone who doesn’t know anything about reggae music, of course, we’re going to sound like Bad Brains. It’s like someone who doesn’t know anything about opera might say that Pavarotti sounds just like Mario Lanza. But when your ears are trained and you know what you’re looking for, you’re going to say, ‘Shit no, Mario Lanza don’t sound anything like Pavarotti. Here are all of Skindred’s albums ranked.

7. Big Tings (2018)

REVIEW: SKINDRED - “Big Tings” » Metal Wani

“For the first time here the band try something different. And again, despite the low ratings, I think they’ve pulled ti off. Going for a more indie rock sound, they still manage to craft great hooks and a danceable groove with songs that stick in your memory. I can imagine not everyone (myself included) is a fan of the cheerleader chants and female vocals, but these do add a quirk to the album from a band I didn’t think would ever really move outside the box in their sound.”

6. Union Black (2011)

Skindred – Union Black (2011, CD) - Discogs

“This is another really good album from the Welsh group, though it does seem that there are fewer real killer songs and a bit more filler. In fact, the best two songs – 5-star “Cut Dem” and “Doom Riff” – are together at the start of the album, leaving the rest feeling like it doesn’t quite measure up. However, all of the songs are pretty good, with the band’s trademark wall-of-sound guitars and Benji’s amazing voice.”

5. Volume (2015)

SKINDRED | Volume - Nuclear Blast

“I won’t say that this is their best yet, but it’s definitely one of them. With most artists and bands, the quality of the music steadily (or rapidly) falls off with each new work, but these guys have somehow managed to keep consistently putting out great music from the start.”

4. Kill The Power (2014)

Kill the Power - Album by Skindred | Spotify

“Benji of course is a fantastic vocalist with a dominating mic presence, genuine-sounding ragga rhymes, and fabulous clean melodies. It’s not like he just appeared from nowhere riding the rap-metal mudslide during the nu-metal era either. Benji was in the Dub War which was way ahead of its time. No doubt about it, they put out FUN music. You are supposed to listen to it, nodding your head, pumping your fist, with a smile on your face. For that reason, as well as the knee-jerk reaction to anything rap-metal, means they never get much love.”

3. Shark Bites And Dog Fights (2009)

Skindred – Shark Bites And Dog Fights (2009, CD) - Discogs

“The first two Skindred records for me are miracles: taking the harder Rap/Rock sort of concept into a Reggae style with a very modern hard sound, great use of melody and wild climax type songs. This one they just sort of did the same but without the highlight tracks of the other two albums. The ‘Electric Avenue’ cover is a clear standout and points towards what they are capable of but there is nothing here that really excited me on what I was my most anticipated album for the year.”

2. Babylon (2002)

Skindred – Babylon (2005, CD) - Discogs

“This band is basically Dub War minus one member. Fans of Dub War will feel well at home here with Benji’s style, but still takes a much harder more metal edge than dub war. Brilliant Nu Metal Reggae Rock, or whatever you wanna call it. Better than a lot of music out there that kind of sounds like it, standout tracks: Babylon and Pressure.”

1. Roots Rock Riot (2007)

Roots Rock Riot [Explicit] by Skindred on Amazon Music - Amazon.com

“Further listening shows it to be a decent album. Nothing amazing, and still not as good as their debut, but pretty good in it’s own right. It’ll no doubt have you singing along in places and there are still the odd guitar riffs which will spin your head around.”
