Storyteller Songs Ranked

Storyteller is the fifth studio album recorded by American singer and songwriter Carrie Underwood. It was released on October 23, 2015, by Sony Music Nashville. Following the release and success of her fourth studio album, Blown Away (2012), Underwood began working on Storyteller in early 2014. However, she tentatively suspended most work on the album because of her pregnancy with her first child. In the midterm, Underwood released her first greatest hits record, Greatest Hits: Decade #1, on December 9, 2014, to much success. After the birth of her son, she took some additional time off before going back into the studio in early 2015 to finish working on the album. Storyteller was Underwood’s last album under Arista Nashville and Sony Music Group, following her new deal with Universal Music Group’s Capitol Nashville. Here are all of the Storyteller songs ranked.

13. Mexico

“Also a bit different, and I really like the adventure element that ties back nicely to Renegade Runaway. It also makes me visualize the wide plains and skies of North America in the same way that Smoke Break does.”

12. Clock Don’t Stop

“Another solid song. Focuses on the passing of time and incorporates a tick-tock beat into the chorus. Again, I appreciate the variety even if it’s not actually a stand-out song in any way.”

11. Like I’ll Never Love You Again

” I think this is a more mature album for Carrie in terms of subject matter, less focus on songs about boyfriend revenge, cowboy casanovas, or marrying someone and not knowing their last name, more introspective songs about about relationships (with family, romantic variety, and now, children!) and love.”

10. What I Never Knew I Always Wanted

“Now this is the ballad I was expecting to love and enjoy. Great song, because it’s full of heart and a bit of fragility, which I think was necessary after all the power songs and strong instrumentation. Doesn’t show weakness, however, and that’s why it’s a great way to finish the album.”

9. Relapse

“My second favorite song on the album. So powerful, and the chorus builds in a way that makes you almost hold your breath a little. Sure, she’s used the metaphor of addiction to love before, but this is the best incarnation yet.”

8. Chaser

“Again more rock than pop, and deals with the pain of letting a lover leave you for another girl. I like the change in tempo, but the song itself didn’t blow me away.”

7. Smoke Break

“This song is interesting because it isn’t exactly like Carrie’s other songs, but it’s still true to her work. It’s pretty serious without being a love ballad, and it’s country without being too gritty. Not my favorite, but it seems like a staple song in the album. Definitely not a filler song.”

6. Dirty Laundry

“Reminds us why we love her and the songwriters she’s so fond of working with on material. Right out the gate, the lyrics of this song hit you with the same strength of Carrie’s vocal performances; “That lipstick on your collar well it ain’t my shade of pink, and I can tell by the smell of that perfume it’s like forty dollars too cheap.” Cheaters, Cheaters, BEWARE: Because Carrie doesn’t have time for your ‘Dirty Laundry’.”

5. The Girl You Think I Am

“I was not very interested by this song, although her voice shines beautifully in it. The lyrics and melody just don’t seem memorable at all, and the other ballads are better. I think they should have chosen either Heartbeat or this song, but not both.”

4. Renegade Runaway

“It’s the 180 degree, sister song of her 2009 lead single “Cowboy Casanova” and the same type of smart word play as 2012’s “Good Girl,” Carrie tells all the boys why they should fear this woman. Describing her as “tough as nails, under that corset,” this Femme Fatale anthem is something all the wives and girlfriends will be singing along to in the car.”

3. Heartbeat

“Is a nice change of pace. A mid-tempo song for those slow dances. Assisted by the talented Sam Smith with backup vocals, this will be a perfect song for long drives and late night getaways with that special someone.”

2. Choctaw County Affair

“The chorus is different and a ton of fun, and the song overall is a feel-good country tune that shows off a different side to Carrie. Same sass, but it just got a lot more interesting.”

1. Church Bells

“Do I hear a little bit of rocker-chic, reinvented version of Reba’s “Fancy” or Dixie Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl”? This story takes us through the full ringer watching the bells evolve from the wedding, to the church services after a night where she’s been beaten and abused, and the bells taking a turn at his funeral. It’s an amazing story to hear unravel, and is one of the album’s strongest efforts.”
