Summer Bruises channel gothic tension and post-punk intensity on new single ‘Death Disco’
Calgary’s Summer Bruises return with their brooding and danceable new single ‘Death Disco’, the first glimpse into their sophomore album ‘Out of Body’. A sharp left turn from the warm cohesion of 2022’s ‘Light to Waste’, this latest offering plunges headlong into coldwave shadows and emotional reckoning, somewhere between the haunted melancholy of Joy Division and the nocturnal pulse of early-80s club scenes.
Built on jagged guitars, machine-tight drums, and a discordant piano that cuts through like broken glass, ‘Death Disco’ strikes a balance between menace and motion. Vocalist Elyse Szabo delivers a performance steeped in regret and allure, tracing the line between desire and self-betrayal. “It’s about realizing you invited the wrong energy in,” she says, “and now you’ve got to dance your way out.”
The track emerged out of rare creative tension within the band, but that friction only adds to the track’s raw electricity. Guitarist Aaron Smelski explains: “This was the first song where we butted heads creatively, but we pushed through it. That tension is what gives it its bite.”
