The Michael Schenker Band Albums Ranked
The Michael Schenker Group (often abbreviated as MSG) are an English guitar-oriented hard rock band, formed in London in 1979 by former Scorpions and UFO guitarist Michael Schenker. In 1986, Schenker and vocalist Robin McAuley formed the McAuley Schenker Group, which lasted until 1993. After that, in 1996 the Michael Schenker Group was reformed. The music is best described as mostly melodic hard rock with progressive undertones. Schenker is famous for his half-black, half-white Gibson Flying V electric guitar and for his unorthodox approach to lead guitar. He is sponsored by Dean Guitars and is well known in the neo-classical genre. Here are all of The Michael Schenker Band albums ranked.

8. Written In The Sand (1996)
“This is definitely an album for people who love guitar solos. Schenker’s epic vibrato, control of awe inspiring bends and amazing note filled runs are nothing new and it’s great to hear him in fine form. And this track epitomises that quality for me. It starts out with Schenker soloing, and 34 seconds in to the track comes a run that amazes me, the selection of notes, the perfect execution, ripped straight from the fingerboard with sweat. He was on top form the day he recorded that.”
7. One Night At Budokan (1982)
“This is a great live album, from the hey-day of live albums. This line up includes Michael (of course), Cozy Powell, Paul Raymond (also ex-ufo), Chris Glen, and Gary Barden. Michael’s playing is excellent…the whole band rocks…and this package includes bonus material, like Cozy’s drum solo. Awesome stuff.”
6. Built To Destroy (1983)
“Built To Destroy is probably the most commercial sounding album that MSG has recorded . This isn’t a bad thing , it is still a top notch album . Great songs , great guitar playing , great singing . If you are not familiar with MSG , this is a good place to start.”

5. The Unforgiven (1999)
“This album also knows how to switch it up between fast paced rockers, mid tempo songs, and the occasional ballad. It has two of the latter, and both of them are really good. “Forever and more” tells a nice little tale of love lost and found again, and just powerful guitar work that really helps it soar. The album closes on the last ballad “The Storm”. Which is a powerful song, a bit sad… But, a nice guitar riff, and an amazing vocal performance by Kelly Keeling.”
4. The Unforgiven World Tour (1999)
“Incredible! By far the best band Shenker has EVER put together! The one review here that ragged on the singer Keith Slack, is either an absolute moron, or a hater. Keith is a brilliant and soulful vocalist who hangs with the best of them. The MSG story live was a piece of crap in my opinion! The singers voice did not fit the band. Michael’s recent and futile attempts at carrying on his legacy have been embarrassing.”

3. Assault Attack (1982)
“While this album may have Graham Bonnet on vocals and not Gary Barden,I think Graham does a great job on the songs. Some don’t like his vocals and I can agree with that with some of the bands he has worked with. This album is one of those where I think his vocals work excellent with the songs.”
2. MSG (1981)
“Michael Schenker shows why he is such an influence on younger guitarist. His playing is full of emotion and melody. On And On, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie and Never Trust A Stranger are Schenker classics. A must have for fans of The Mad Axeman.”
1. Michael Schenker Group (1980)
“This is quite possibly the best overall guitar album of it’s era. Michael Schenker is an incredibly technical yet emotive guitar player who, quite simply, takes the art of rock guitar playing to unknown heights. This album, his first solo effort after leaving the highly acclaimed band, UFO, displays a wide range of songs. The supporting musicians are all very accomplished, especially the rhythm section of Mo Foster and Simon Phillips of Jeff Beck fame.”
