There Goes The Neighborhood Songs Ranked
There Goes the Neighborhood is the fifth solo studio album by the American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Walsh, sometime-guitarist for the Eagles. The album was released in May 1981, on Asylum Records, three years after Walsh’s album But Seriously, Folks…. A commercial and critical success, it is generally regarded as the culmination of the smoother, more adult-oriented sound of Walsh’s solo work. The album features contributions from two Eagles’ members Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit as well as session musicians including Russ Kunkel, David Lindley, Bob Mayo, and Victor Feldman. The album peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200. The album only spawned one single, “A Life of Illusion”, which would become one of Walsh’s most popular songs. The single also topped the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Here are all of There Goes The Neighborhood songs ranked.

8. Things
“oe has a curious ability to make significant concepts into a joke and then turn it back on its head again. The lead off track on the album begins as an introspective ballad concerning materialism, which combines with an arty recitation of humorous tongue in cheek word play. Things is one of Joe’s standout compositions and performances. It has a good Eagles feel to it as well with background support from his mates.”
7. Down on the Farm
“Down On The Farm. Another Walsh joke song and yes it is pretty hoe-down country fried. Depending on your bent, this might be the one track you skip most often, or perhaps not.”

6. A Life of Illusion
“A Life Of Illusion. One of Joe’s perfect compositions. A little spattering of Mariachi cantina effects give it a south of the border feel without getting too Tex-Mex or Willie-ish. One of the four or five best tracks on the album, it is catchy and has some great guitar interplays along with more vocoder synths as accents.”
5. Rockets
“There is some great classic tracks amongst this album, and the tempo is really great making it a very enjoyable album. he “pretty” song on the album, it’s another one with a definitive Eagles feel to it.”
4. You Never Know
“In typical Walsh style, Joe finishes off the course with a terrific desert. This is another significant concept song with a good head of comedy and wiley word interplay. It is meant as a FU song to someone someplace, but if a song on the album defines the album title, this is it. Terrific instrumentals and great guitar solos spread across a sneaking through the alley groove. With Bones, Rivers, and Things, these four are well worth picking up the platter or downloading the stream.”
3. Bones
“Another top notch funkified Joe treasure where everything is tossed in which makes Walsh one of the best. It’s a grabber with time signature changes and an almost Pink Floyd dressing. A Very Tasty Salad!”

2. Rivers (Of the Hidden Funk)
“Finally a guitar-centric piece with Joe back on the vocoder synthesizer, or it might be Don Felder as this is another track backed by the Eagles crew. My vote for best track on the album, a serious and lyrically smart tune just to show Joe is not all irreverence and laughs.”
1. Made Your Mind Up
“Nice Walsh mid-tempo rocker with excellent drum and piano combo and a Walsh guitar break in the middle. Sure sounds like it! Great tunes, incredible guitar work (and I’m not talking only about the ‘solos’), and quite original arrangements. I have all (I think) of Walsh’s older records but this album is like the pinnacle of all that came before.”
