Vanessa Carlton Songs Ranked

Vanessa Lee Carlton (born August 16, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. Upon completion of her education at the School of American Ballet, Carlton chose to pursue singing instead, performing in New York City bars and clubs while attending college. Three months after recording a demo with producer Peter Zizzo, she signed with A&M Records. Her debut single, “A Thousand Miles”, reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2002. Her debut album, Be Not Nobody, followed and received a platinum certification in the United States. Her subsequent albums, Harmonium (2004) and Heroes & Thieves (2007), failed to match the commercial success of the first. She produced a fourth album, Rabbits on the Run (2011), independently before seeking a record label to release it. Carlton released a Christmas EP titled Hear the Bells in November 2012, and released her fifth studio album, Liberman, on October 23, 2015. Here are all of Vanessa Carlton songs ranked.

10. Spring Street (Heroes & Thieves, 2007)

“To me I think she’s talking at first about two loves that she left behind for some reason, to pursue dreams, to escape, ect. And then someday she had a daughter, (not sure if it’s with one of the loves described) but then I think when she had to say goodbye to her daughter or when she came back to the scenes where she left the men, I think she understood how hard it was for them to say goodbye.”

9. I Don’t Want to Be a Bride (Rabbits on the Run, 2011)

“I adore the ethereal quality of her album Rabbits on the Run. “We will be like kings under lavender skies.” Her lyrics are so poetic. I feel like this song is pretty self explanatory. She wants to be with this person and be happy, but she doesn’t want to marry them.”

8. San Francisco (Harmonium, 2004)

“I’ve always loved this song, and its really easy/fun to play it on the piano. Love come and lost, during the romantic time of year, summer, when those sad romances come to an end eventually.”

7. Twilight (Be Not Nobody, 2002)

“I absolutely love this song..it really ends her album on a good note. Its so uplifting and then her voice changes when she sings twilight- like its a really horrible thing- I love this song!!”

6. Heroes & Thieves (Heroes & Thieves, 2007)

“I never really liked this song live, but the album version is amazing. The strings on the track are beautiful as well as the piano. Heroes and Thieves, a song about the people in your life who are there to help and those who aren’t, and truly learning who’s gonna be there for you in the end.”

5. Come Undone (Heroes & Thieves, 2007)

“Brilliant lyrics! Everything in this song sounds so smart yet unique and offbeat: “I’m a sycophantic courtier With an elegant repost.” This song feels very chill to me especially considering the intro and fade out.”

4. Ordinary Day (Be Not Nobody, 2002)

“Every one of Vanessa’s songs give me a feeling almost like heartbreak. Like a window looking at a life that can’t ever be had again. I guess you could call it bittersweet nostalgia. But no other artist gives me this feeling as intensely as she does.”

3. White Houses (Harmonium, 2004)

“A Beautiful song. Flawless transitions, sweet melodies, heartfelt vocals. The story is far from cliche. OK, maybe it’s a common theme of a teenie bopper film, but she sings it so well that the song rises above anything a sort of derivate or commercial.”

2. Annie (Harmonium, 2004)

“Stevie Nicks joins her on this track, which makes it even more amazing! This song is about how she had found the love of her life, but he didn’t realize it in time. The song ends with the line, “You will never know I was the one.” So beautiful and sad.”

1. A Thousand Miles (Be Not Nobody, 2002)

“The keys employed and the melody combination are signs of sheer brilliance. The lyrics aren’t spectacular, but the piano more than compensates. This song is amazing and very nostalgic. I like how she plays the piano she does a very good job at it. The lyrics are good too.”
