Whitney Houston Songs Ranked
Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer and actress. Referred to as “The Voice”, she is regarded as one of the most successful and influential vocalists of all time. Houston released seven studio albums and two soundtrack albums, all of which have been certified diamond, multi-platinum, platinum, or gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). With sales of over 200 million records worldwide, she is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. Her crossover appeal on the popular music charts as well as her prominence on MTV influenced generations of African American artists. Following the critical and commercial success of My Love Is Your Love (1998), Houston renewed her contract with Arista for $100 million. However, her personal struggles began overshadowing her career, and the album Just Whitney (2002) received mixed reviews. Her drug use and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown received widespread media coverage. After a six-year break from recording, Houston returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her final studio album, I Look to You (2009). On February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The coroner’s report showed that she had accidentally drowned in the bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. News of her death coincided with the 2012 Grammy Awards and was featured prominently in international media. Houston was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. “Whitney’s cover of Steve Winwood’s 1986 hit was originally featured on the Japanese edition of her third studio album, I’m Your Baby Tonight. It was only released in Japan as a bonus cut. The song lay dormant for 28 years. But everything changed in 2019. Houston’s estate and RCA Records targeted a Norwegian DJ named Kygo for a 2020 collaboration. Her sister-in-law, Pat Houston, felt particularly sold on working with him because of his tasteful trop-house remix of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing. And the rest is history. Higher Love has been streamed 548 million times on Spotify, just behind first placer, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

11. So Emotional (Whitney, 1987)
“In my opinion uptempo tracks are usually better-suited for general listening with powerhouse singers who love to flex such power because often-times the song actually suits the theatrics. Even so, I still wish Houston pulled back a bit at the end and sung it powerfully yet relatively straight as she did for most of the song. The growls in particular near the end got more than a bit ridiculous. But, I must give credit here: there’s real drive in the backing track, with a hard-hitting beat and definite rock influence and a good sense of fun.”
10. Didn’t We Almost Have It All (Whitney, 1987)

It is one Houston song that should not be missed, for it shows Whitney’s vocal ability.”
