Arise Songs Ranked
Arise is the fourth studio album by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura, released in 1991 by Roadrunner Records. Upon its release, the album received top reviews from heavy metal magazines such as Rock Hard, Kerrang! and Metal Forces. Arise is considered Sepultura’s finest hour among longtime fans. While the music on Arise was mostly in the same death/thrash style as their previous album, Beneath the Remains, it was clear that the Sepultura sound was acquiring an experimental edge. The album presented their first incursions with industrial music, hardcore punk and Latin percussion. The tour (1991–1992) that supported the album was the group’s longest at that time, totalling 220 shows in 39 countries. During this trek, the album went gold in Indonesia—the band’s first music industry certification. By the tour’s end, Arise had achieved platinum sales worldwide.

12. Intro
“The thrash era came to a close at the beginning of the 90’s, with this album being perhaps that last true, classic thrash album released. Fortunately, Sepultura ensured that thrash would go out with a bang.”
11. C.I.U. (Criminals in Uniform)
“I have nothing to say about this masterpiece that Sepultura gave to humanity back in 1991.It is,in my opinion the best album ever written after the first 6 albums of Metallica.Still to this day,it sounds so pure, powerful, massive, extreme, and progressive at the same time.”
10. Under Siege (Regnum Irae)
“Heavy, brutal, raw, primal, aggressive, antisocial, tribal, throbbing and pounding… nothing else in 1991 sounded anything like this. And it’s still extremely good today. Most death metal has easily surpassed this disc in terms of sheer brutality, but Sepultura ain’t far behind.”

9. Infected Voice
“Each of them is well written and enjoyable, but they don’t stand out like the other songs. The original tracks close with the fantastic Infected Voice. This is my personal favorite from this album. It’s short and sweet, and Max’s shouting “Infected Voice!!” over the synchronized guitars at the end of the chorus is just about the most memorable moment I’ve ever heard on a metal album.”
8. Murder
“The pinnacle of Sepultura’s early career. This is clearly as far as they could go with their Death/Thrash sound and its clearly one of the best in the genre. This is a great album and is extremely enjoyable to any one who enjoys this type of music.”
7. Subtraction
“Subtraction is another 1 of my favorites, just catchy as all hell. With speedy thrash guitars and heavy bass, this is a song i find myself hitting repeat on alot.”
6. Orgasmatron
“This song i repeat like 6 times i just love it,Andreas just pulls the solo off perfectly & the drums just sound way heavier here. All in all this is the perfect album for newcomers to the band & trust me get the reissue with Orgasmatron and another 2 songs that are rough cuts with just instruments.”
5. Meaningless Movements
“This is a Thrash Masterpiece…. Max’s Voice, while still growing at this point, was still one of the most vicious metal singers of the day. His guitar work, as well as the work of Andreas was amazing… precisely fast with aggressive riffs and amazing (and even sometimes innovative) solos… Paulo Jr. plays with such a sense of urgency and provides an excellent backing to the guitars.”

4. Altered State
“Altered State is just as good, loaded with crazy drum patterns and mean vocals from Max(this is another mosh song, for me anyways) loaded with rumbling bass from Paulo. The intro to the song altered state is very cool, and it hints at the more tribal work they will do later.”
3. Desperate Cry
“Desperate Cry is my favorite song,or 1 of my favorites because of the sheer power behind Max’ voice. The groove is that in vain of Pantera’s Walk, once it gets into your ears it stays in your head and makes you want to move your body & bang your head. Andreas guitar work is just downright awesome, the solo just crushes everything.”
2. Arise
“The album starts off with Arise which is just a powerhouse of a song, harsh vicious lyrics buzzsaw guitars and heavy pulse pounding drum & bass. Arise is just a taste of what’s to come.”
1. Dead Embryonic Cells
“Dead Embryonic Cells is another staple in their catalogue and remains a constant at almost every live show ever since it’s release. It is not overrated,it’s just that good ! The guitars are so heavy and groovy at the same time and Max voice really shines on this entire album.”
