Beneath the Remains Songs Ranked
Beneath the Remains is the third studio album by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura, released on April 7, 1989. It was their first release by Roadrunner Records. The album had improved production and songwriting compared to the band’s previous albums. In time it would be acclaimed as a classic in the thrash metal genre. According to vocalist Max Cavalera, Sepultura had “really found [their] style” on that album. In January 2013, Beneath the Remains was inducted into Decibel magazine’s Hall of Fame, becoming the second Sepultura album to do so, the first being Roots. This induction would make Sepultura the first band to have more than one of their albums being featured in the Decibel Hall of Fame. Here are all of Beneath the Remains songs ranked.

9. Hungry
“Hungry” which is yet another fast, pounding and energetic thrasher that boasts more of Igor’s brutally tight and aggressively fast drumming that can easily produce a serious case of violent whiplash throughout, meanwhile Max and Andreas shred away with more and more savagely fast, thrashing and blistering riff work over Igor’s relentless drumming and Paulo’s strong, trembling, chilling bass, and Andreas uncorks yet another wickedly fast, scorching and shredding solo near the end that will make every single bit of hair on your head stand.”
8. Primitive Future
“Beneath the Remains” finds it’s way to it’s extremely fitting conclusion in the ever so bone-shattering, skull-crusher of a finale, “Primitive Future”. This blistering monster of a track is anchored by very fast and aggressive vocals from Max throughout as he relentlessly barks and yells his way over a relentless fest of rapid-fast, head decapitating riffing and super fast drumming.”
7. Sarcastic Existence
“Track five, “Sarcastic Existence” is another favorite here in which Igor kicks things off with some killer fade in double bass drumming which are soon followed by some really cool, heavy riffing, and how about those amazing melodic-like riffs around the 1:25 mark too? Very cool if you ask me.”

6. Stronger Than Hate
“Track three, “Stronger Than Hate” is another one of my favorites that starts off at a frenetic and blistering pace with more blindingly fast, razor-sharp riffing and annihilating drums, and a little quick, fast, ripping solo is also tacked on. Max’s vocals are just super angry throughout this song, and Igor also dominates with plenty of rapid, pounding beats and ripping double bass patterns too, and the guitars of course just annihilate everything in it’s path.”
5. Mass Hypnosis
“Following that, we have track four, “Mass Hypnosis” which includes some real creepy guitar sound in the beginning, along with more blistering, fiery, face-cleaving riffage, and more of Igor’s amazingly fast, pounding drums that makes you wonder how he can maintain such insane speeds with his drumming, and not to also mention Max furiously barks and howls away throughout this track with his powerful vocals, especially when he goes “Hate through the arteries/Mass hypnosis”.”
4. Beneath the Remains
“The album’s opening title track, “Beneath the Remains” begins with that aforementioned sorrowful acoustic guitar opening which does provide a breathing moment before the coming of the storm, and then after a brief moment of silence, the song immediately bursts out of the gate with a maddening and enraging onslaught of savage, vicious, blindingly fast, head-slicing riffing, and then Igor’s massive, suffocating, rapid-fast, blasting drums soon kicks in, and then Max comes in with his furiously aggressive and raging vocal delivery thus turning the song into a violent malestrom of furious, no-holds-barred thrashing mayhem.”

3. Lobotomy
“Track seven, “Lobotomy” meanwhile is another epic piece of brutal, killer thrash that is heavily stacked with lots and lots of nasty, fast, shredding, thrashing riffage and hot, smoking leads and solos throughout, plus tons of fast, pulverizing, thrashing drums from Igor and brutal vocals from Max, and be sure to check out his unsettling yells of “Brain killing brain” which is guaranteed to send chills down your spine.”
2. Inner Self
“The album’s second track (and my absolute favorite off the album), “Inner Self” is a more mid-tempo, yet very catchy and driving number for the most part as it boasts plenty of catchy, heavy, crunching, driving riffs, strong, heavy, trembling bass, and meaty, pounding, driving drums, and not also mention the song also features all kinds of great lyrics and a powerful message as well when Max barks out:”
1. Slaves of Pain
“Slaves of Pain” which is yet another one of my favorites that just proceeds to annihilate and bludgeon your senses right from the get go with it’s rapid-quick, blasting, speeding drums and wild, fast, scathing and scorching riffing. It just really amazes me how these guys can play at some really amazing speeds here, and this song is a great example of that.”
