Benefit Songs Ranked

Benefit is the third studio album by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released in April 1970. It was the first Tull album to include pianist and organist John Evan – though he was not yet considered a permanent member of the group – and the last to include bass guitarist Glenn Cornick, who was fired from the band upon completion of touring for the album. It was recorded at Morgan Studios, the same studio where the band recorded its previous album Stand Up; however, they experimented with more advanced recording techniques. Frontman Ian Anderson said that he considers Benefit to be a much darker album than Stand Up, owing to the pressures of an extensive U.S. tour and frustration with the music business. Here are all of Benefit songs ranked.

10. Sossity; You’re a Woman

“BENEFIT continues the folk elements with strong songwriting, addictive melodic developments and the beautiful poetic adroit vocal suaveness of Ian Anderson’s vocal style accompanied by his signature flute fills, however the addition of the keys and Barre’s new freedom to expand his guitar duties make this a much harder rocking album than “Stand Up.”

9. Teacher

“This song has a kick ass guitar riff and I love the percussion in it as well. I would say this is the best song in the album but that’s only my opinion. This is my favorite song off of this album. For some reason I can’t stop listening to it lol. Now, stop reading what i said about this song and go listen to it.”

8. To Cry You a Song

“To Cry you a song. This song has a kick ass guitar riff and the drum beat is amazing, highly recommended that you listen to this one!”

7. Son

“Jethro Tull’s Benefit is not an album I return to often. If I’m honest, it’s one of my least favourite of their ’70s material. Whilst I find the music and the playing to be pretty good, I just think it lacks any sort of hook and doesn’t compare to Stand Up and Aqualung. “

6. Nothing to Say

“Nothing to say. It’s a long song but a very good long song, I highly recommend listening to this one. Benefit was technically the first album I ever heard from Jethro Tull. A fact that I still feel was quite unfortunate. It was one I found in my mothers vinyl collection and I never returned to it, or the band’s catalogue for a long long time.”

5. With You There to Help Me

“I believe this to be Tull’s best album – from the days when there was a new category of music known as heavy music. What became of that?! It has a true group sound – like an orchestra. It’s not generally separated into solos, and there is a richness to the production, so that you are constantly noticing new elements, even after listening many times.”

4. Inside

“Great flute and percussion in this song as well. This is one of my favorite songs on this album so I recommend it to anyone. The addition of keyboards makes for a fuller sound, but Martin Barre still plays a strong role with his very strong and unusual riffs.”

3. For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and Me

” For Micheal Collins, Jefferey and Me. Most of this song is acoustic guitar but very well done you will not be dissapointed in this one I guarantee it.”

2. A Time for Everything?

“The unusual time signatures are starting to appear more often on Tull’s 3rd album, but they have not yet evolved into the rather broken, manic and irritating time signatures and changes that really took hold as from Thick as a Brick. So this is then Underground music, but definitely not Prog. Rock – and all the better for it.”

1. Play in Time

“I have to say this is a pretty good album, I’m not going to say it is there best album but it is non of the less a good album. The guitar is excellent and the flute is outstanding especially on the first song, then comes the second song roaring with some good guitar and percussion oh and can’t forget about the piano as well”
