Bolbbalgan4 Songs Ranked

Bolbbalgan4 (Korean: 볼빨간 사춘기; RR: Bolbbalgan Sachungi), also known as BOL4 or Blushing Youth, is a South Korean musical act formed by Shofar Music in 2016. They appeared on Superstar K6 in 2014 before signing a contract with their current agency. BOL4 was originally a duo consisting of Ahn Ji-young and Woo Ji-Yoon. They debuted with the single “Fight Day” from the mini-album Red Ickle on April 22, 2016. The first syllable of the Korean word sachungi “puberty” is pronounced the same as the Sino-Korean numeral four (sa), and accordingly, the group name is sometimes shortened to BOL4. The duo went on a temporary hiatus due to Ahn’s music class requirements in the first half of 2018. Bolbbalgan4 signed with King Records and debuted in Japan on June 5, 2019, with the mini-album Red Planet (Japan Edition). On April 2, 2020, Shofar Music announced that Woo Ji-Yoon had left the duo, and Ahn Ji-young will continue to promote as Bolbbalgan4. Here are all of the Bolbbalgan4 songs ranked.

4. Workaholic (Two Five, 2019)

“The most interesting aspect of BOL4’s single Workaholic (워커홀릭) is its daring instrumental. The song’s melody is the same meandering, over-phrased template we often get from their discography, but the production brings in new elements to their singles run.”

3. Bom (Puberty BookⅠ Bom, 2019)

“As far as springtime tracks go, Bom is pretty standard. I feel like I’ve heard this exact template before. It’s bright but not uptempo, with a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere that never pushes far from its modest boundaries.”

2. Travel (Red Diary, Page 2, 2018)

“Jiyoung’s quirky vocals are perfectly suited to the opening verse, imbuing the track with a clipped, rhythmic delivery that adds incredible spunk to the already bouncy melody. The chorus brings in electric guitar, utilized in a way that feels more country than k-pop.”

1. Hug (Puberty BookⅡ Pum, 2020)

“It’s the kind of inconsequential springtime release that makes my eyes glaze over. It has a bit more pep in its step than Leo did, but that’s not saying much. The muted instrumental melds keys and guitar for a coffeeshop aesthetic. The verses take a drowsy approach despite their upbeat rhythm, and the chorus just loops around the same airy exclamation.”
