Butthole Surfers Albums Ranked
Butthole Surfers is an American rock band formed in San Antonio, Texas by singer Gibby Haynes and guitarists Paul Leary and Jonathan Grisham in 1981. The band has had numerous personnel changes, but its core lineup of Haynes, Leary, and drummer King Coffey has been consistent since 1983. Teresa Nervosa served as second drummer from 1983 to 1985, 1986 to 1989, and 2009. The band has also employed a variety of bass players, most notably Jeff Pinkus. Emerging from the 1980s hardcore punk scene, Butthole Surfers quickly became known for their chaotic live shows, black comedy, and a sound that incorporated elements of psychedelia, noise rock, and punk as well as their use of sound manipulation and tape editing. Although they were respected by their peers and attracted a devoted fanbase, Butthole Surfers had little commercial success until 1996’s Electriclarryland. The album contained the hit single “Pepper”, which climbed to number one on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart that year. Here are all of Butthole Surfers albums ranked.

8. Weird Revolution (2001)
“I get really sick of people who act like the Surfers are some inside joke only accessible to the ultra in-the-know crowd. They are and have always been a group with highly eclectic tastes and a warped sense of humor who make interesting and kick ass music. This album is a great example of their work and evolution as artists.”
7. Electriclarryland (1996)
““Electriclarryland”, the song material is much more accessible with all the variety of styles. Grungiger Alternative Rock, Folk, Punk and Country are just some of the ingredients that Butthole Surfers use on the plate. It doesn’t seem decay, but as if from a single piece – a small portion of madness is always with you. But never so much that the music would get on your nerves (just like “Locust…”).”
6. Piouhgd (1991)
“The absurd humor and musical qualities are so good. i think paul leary nails it… i.e. including orchestral strings, sirens, native American chants, so on, at the end of his guitar performances. i love this music. I believe, at times, This music to be beyond entertainment and enters the realm of fine art.”

5. Rembrandt Pussyhorse (1986)
“REMBRANDT PUSSYHORSE is the 2nd full-length by the Butth*le Surfers. I do prefer this over LOCUST ABORTION TECHNICIAN. I just think there is more variety, more spaciness, & overall better songs(besides Human Cannonball on Locust). Yes, REMBRANDT PH is really a lot of experimentation, even more so than other Surfer albums. This Re-release adds the Cream Corn EP.”
5. Independent Worm Saloon (1993)
“This album takes all the butthole experiments and turns them into musical masterpieces that paint a picture with witty, insightful lyrics from beginning to end. Every song is infectious with incredible guitar sounds that form part of a musical collage that when added to the vocal melodies is stunning. This album has been a favorite out of my vast collection and a perfect example of how mainstream sterile institutions that polute this country, like Rolling Stone magazine, need to be ignored while true fans of brilliant art can relish in the Butthole soundscape of musical bliss.”

3. Hairway to Steven (1988)
“Regarding the subject matter of this track, I want to emphasize that the essence of BHS lies in creating art through music. And much of art involves creating unique views of human experience and the human condition. And for this listener track one evokes much sadness and pain, because it in general speaks of human brutality towards other humans. I believe this is the effect the band wanted to achieve.”
2. Psychic… Powerless… Another Man’s Sac (1984)
“Whenever I want to irritate someone, I blast ‘Lady Sniff’ really loud on my stereo and sing along off the top of my lungs until I’m begged to cease and desist. You’re either going to love this album or you’re going to hate the hell out of it. This album is like having a root canal without Novocain. Yes, blue baby Skywalker, this album is like sticking your tongue down your mother’s throat.”
1. Locust Abortion Technician (1987)
“And Locust Abortion is the creme de la creme of the Surfers music. A short but bursting to the brim sonic sponge bath carefully engineered to hit you where it hurts. These guys were on drugs when they made this. Locust Abortion Technician is also very nightmarish and trippy. One of the best Alternative Rock albums of the 80s.This was even one of Kurt Cobain’s favorite albums. Listen to this album all the way through.
