Dandy in the Underworld Songs Ranked

Dandy in the Underworld is the twelfth and final studio album by English rock band T. Rex. It was released on 11 March 1977 by record label EMI. It reached No. 26 in the UK charts, the band’s highest-charting album since 1974’s Zinc Alloy. The leading single “I Love to Boogie” had been a hit single in the UK the previous year, peaking at number 13 in the singles chart. Dandy in the Underworld was regarded by critics as a comeback for the band. It was praised for the strength of the songwriting and Bolan’s vocal performances. However, it would prove to be the band’s final album, as Marc Bolan died in a car crash in September 1977 at age 29. In 2006, an album of alternate versions and unreleased tracks called Final Cuts was released. Here are all of Dandy in the Underworld songs ranked.

12. Teen Riot Structure

“Teen Riot Structure” actually reminds me of the pop band Weezer a little bit, no kidding. I wonder if it could have been an influence? From the surrealistic underground world of Dandy to the future dystopia of Teen Riot Structure; every song is lyrical genius and musical gems and includes Bolan’s last Top 20 hit.”

11. Hang-Ups

“Listen well to the song HANG-UPS,Marc discribes himself perfectly as he was at this point in his career. Unfortunately this was the last we were to hear from T.Rex.”

10. Groove a Little

“Groove a Little” is a danceable little blues song, nice and pretty and easy to remember. Its homespun Rock n Roll, always what Bolan was actually good at, and has more in comman with Electric Warrior than any other album he ever produced. It comes reccomended from me.”

9. Visions of Domino

“Speaking of hard rock, does “Visions of Domino” remind anyone else of Thin Lizzy? Just listen to that crunching and soaring chorus. Wow!”

8. I’m a Fool for You, Girl

“Listen to the vocals for further proof. A GREAT pop song is next- “I’m a Fool for You Girl”. Its funny, when people look back on this now see the black cover, the title and think of his death, they always see it as kind of prophetic.”

7. Crimson Moon

“At any rate, the album immediately improves after that with a wickedly haunting chorus in “Crimson Moon”. Listen to THOSE vocals and tell me you’re not impressed. I wouldn’t believe you!”

6. Dandy in the Underworld

“Dandy in the Underworld is the grand conclusion of a groundbreaking glam rocker who was easily a few notches better than several other of the glam stars at the time, and the really strange thing about is all is that, I wouldn’t even categorize Dandy in the Underworld as a glam rock album. More like a slight attempt at punk with the constant, noticeable heavy guitar tones. That really feels like the direction T Rex would have continued exploring had that horrible September day never taken place.”

5. Universe

“Universe” has an amazing vocal melody and chorus, and it takes advantage of the late 70’s recording technology by giving it a very outer space feeling. Listen to the vocals for further proof. “

4. I Love to Boogie

“After 1976’s New York CityI Love to Boogie‘s little success showed once again that T. Rex could still make UK top ten hits. I’m pretty sure Bolan wouldn’t have been out of place in the 80’s commercially, for better or for worse.”

3. Jason B. Sad

“Jason B. Sad” takes us back to the bluesy/glam rocks, perhaps the only true glam rocker on the entire album. One of t-rex best albums, just a shame was his last one. As all fans would clearly state he was on way back to the top when this was released.”

2. The Soul of My Suit

“The Soul of my Suit” is right in the same exact territory of pop-writing perfection. This album is just great, i’ve heard all T.Rex albums and I can say that this is one of the finest…The guitars are so full of inspiration, and marc’s voice is unbeliavable.”

1. Pain and Love

“Ironically, “Pain And Love” is the only ballad, and it is the only track that does not sound upbeat, including the lyrics: “Once in youth the wisdom crouched/Deep inside my bedroom/Visitations now are scarce, winter life is lonely.” Most of the tracks are bright pop tracks, tinted by various influences.”
