6. Your Filthy Little Mouth (1994)

“Your Filthy Little Mouth is one of David Lee Roth’s best solo albums. The two things that really make it distinctive are the wide variety of musical styles and the excellent lyrics. Dave plays rock, soul, country, reggae and more – and plays each style in superior fashion.”

5. DLR Band (1998)

“The guitar work here is my favorite of any Dave solo work, and overall, it feels more like a band effort than solo Dave… maybe that’s why this is the “DLR Band.” I’m not going to say it’s exactly Van Halen… but it is the closest sound to Van Halen that you can get without having Eddie, Alex, and Mikey on the album as well.”

4. Diamond Dave (2003)

“While I would consider this to be a rock album, many of the songs sound like Vegas lounge tunes. It just goes to show how talented and versatile Dave is as an artist. He can go from hard rock (as in 1998s DLR Band) to a more laid-back vegas sound and do both successfully. The album has a nice flow and there are no fillers. Dave puts his own signature persona on each tune and makes them sound like his own.”

3. A Little Ain’t Enough (1991)

“”A Little Ain’t Enough” was and is a great album! This was the last “big rock” album Dave did for awhile, and has a BIG sound courtesy of Bob Rock. Like all things Dave, this album is FUN! From the title cut to “40 Below” and especially “Hammerhead Shark” Dave’s lyrics are truly funny and virtually all the songs have memorable hooks.”

2. Eat ‘Em And Smile (1986)

“On EAT ‘EM, Dave reaches his apotheosis. The opening to “Yankee Rose” distills Dave’s musical persona to its joyous, leering, and strangely wistful essence. He clearly hasn’t been taking his pills, and his backing band are the best hired guns in the business. Steve Vai’s virtuosic noodling is the perfect complement to Dave: it’s excessive, it’s masturbatory, and it’s frickin AWESOME”

1. Skyscraper (1988)

“Skyscraper invites the listener to Dave’s crazy world which is carefully crafted by the superb Yankee Rose band : Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, phenomenal bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Gregg Bissonette. Some clownish, hypnotic, swinging, and all in all surreal music is flowing out of this disc. At the time, I thought Skyscraper’s sound was too soft, but with some equalizing I can bring business to the disc and enjoy it better. Dave’s competition with the Van Halen clan improved his vocal performance and songwriting 10-fold ! Knucklebones, Hot Dog and a Shake, and Hina are absolute rock classics.”
