Dog & Butterfly Songs Ranked
Dog & Butterfly is the fourth studio album by American rock band Heart, released on October 7, 1978, by Portrait Records, following a legal dispute with Mushroom Records over the release of the band’s second studio album, Magazine, in April 1978. Dog & Butterfly peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard 200 and has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album spawned the singles “Straight On” and “Dog & Butterfly”. As Heart themselves noted on the album’s release, side one was the Dog side, and was the more “rocking” compared to the Butterfly side two, which consisted mostly of ballads, with the exception of the closer “Mistral Wind”. Here are all of Dog & Butterfly songs ranked.

8. Mistral Wind
“Track 8, Mistral Wind, which closes out the album, is another song that I like a lot. The song starts out nice and quiet, for the first two minutes ten seconds. But after that, the drums and guitars start sounding and you know that the song has suddenly changed to hard rock.”
7. Straight On
“Straight On, which is track 4, is a great song. The band, especially Ann and Nancy sound like they are having fun singing this song. Then, you get the title track, which is a nice acoustic piece, starting with the acoustic guitar. This is a mellow track, and one of the most wonderful songs in music history.”
6. Nada One
“Nada One’ which opens with a haunting music-box sounding melody (I believe I recall that this is a real music-box they used) and listen carefully as you hear the haunting mechanics of the box give way to a fantastic acoustic guitar melody which breaks into Ann’s fantastic vocal.”

5. Hijinx
“The next track ‘Hijinx’ pulls you in with a great guitar hook, and hold you through to the last track of the ‘Dog’ side, which is their mega-hit ‘Straight On’Now, to truly appreciate and enjoy the ‘Butterfly’ tracks, may I suggest listening at home, with the best sound equipment you own. Dim the lights, and sit back and relax. You will not enjoy these nearly as much, for example, if you are on your commute home from work.”
4. Lighter Touch
” As presented here, it’s very similar in arrangement to “Lighter Touch” which may be one reason it was passed over for release originally. ‘Lighter Touch’ just flows beautifully, soothing, setting you up for the next track.”

3. High Time
“Heart’s Dog & Butterfly album from 1978 is a great album to listen to. Ann and Nancy Wilson are excellent singers and have beautiful voices. I have this title on LP and CD. Eight songs of some of their best work.”
2. Dog & Butterfly
“‘Dog & Butterfly’ is the other single from this album, a beautiful acoustic track which had lots of radio airplay, and solidified Heart’s versatility to create beautiful pop melodies within an otherwise hard rock framework.”
1. Cook With Fire
“The disc opens with ‘Cook With Fire’ a blazing live track, which when I first bought the album confused me because I then thought I had bought a live album. Then I had thought it was odd to include one live track among an otherwise studio album, but now understand that this performance was so good both musically and sonicly that it just works.”
