Heart Albums Ranked

Heart is an American rock band formed in 1970 in Seattle, Washington by Steve Fossen (bass guitar), Roger Fisher (guitar), David Belzer (keyboards), and Jeff Johnson (drums). It evolved from an existing band, White Heart. Since 1973 the vocalists for Heart have been sisters Ann Wilson (lead vocals, flute, guitar) (born June 19, 1950) and Nancy Wilson (vocals, guitar, mandolin) (born March 16, 1954). Over Heart’s history, it has had three primary lineups. Heart first found success when its members moved to Canada, in part to avoid the draft, then later in the United States, and ultimately worldwide. Heart rose to fame in the mid-1970s with music influenced by hard rock and heavy metal as well as folk music. The band’s popularity declined in the early 1980s, but they launched a successful comeback in 1985 which continued into the 1990s, releasing numerous hard-rock songs and ballads. Heart disbanded in 1998, then resumed performing in 2002. In the summer of 2019, Heart ended its 2016 acrimonious break-up by launching its “Love Alive” tour. To date, Heart has sold over 35 million records worldwide, including over 22.5 million in album sales in the U.S. They have had top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2010s. Heart was ranked number 57 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock”. In 2006, Ann Wilson was listed as one of the “Top Heavy Metal Vocalists of All Time” by Hit Parader magazine. In 2013, Heart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Here are all Heart albums ranked.

10. Jupiters Darling (2004)

“This is one of the very best Heart albums, possibly their best! Every song is a winner. The production and performances are first rate. Their affinity for Led Zeppelin is incorporated into the overall sound to great effect. This album is a return to their early sound with the added benefit of a maturity that suits them well. Both the acoustic and electric guitar work is a tasty feast for the ears. If you are a Heart fan, don’t even think twice – buy this album!”

9. Desire Walks On (1993)

“Desire Walks On is what I consider to be classic Heart. The songs are obviously chosen with care, melding well into a cohesive whole, and most of the material is at least partially written by Ann and Nancy. There is a very good mix of driving, hard rocking songs such as “Black on Black II” and “Rage”, along with more melodic or ballad types such as “Back to Avalon”, “Anything is Possible”, and potentially my favorite on the album, “In Walks the Night”. “Voodoo Doll” is a nice change-up with its wonderful beat and Annie’s usual amazing vocals, along with some great backup vocals.”

8. Magazine (1977)

“This was supposed to be Heart’s second album, but was recalled and became a rare album. This is my favorite Heart album. I have two copies of this album on compact disc with decent sound, but when I got this edition I was blown away, great job of remastering and the packaging is better then the original album, lyrics, pictures, and who play’s what on songs.everyone has heard” Heartless”,but Heart’s version of ” Without You” is great the title song “Magazine” is my favorite Heart song, and to close the set they do a live version of the Kiki Dee song “I got the music in me”get this one before it”s gone”

7. Brigade (1990)

“”Brigade” is one of Heart’s finest albums. It was at this point that Ann and Nancy started to gain more creative control, as their last two albums were filled with songs that Capitol forced them to record (ie, ballads). This is much more of a rocking album than their previous two releases. The opening track, “Wild Child”, is one of the heaviest tracks the band ever did. Highlighted by a forceful synth line and fierce guitars, it makes for a strong opener. Next comes the big hit off the album, the ballad “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You”. Written by Mutt Lange, many people hate this song, but I for one love it. Ann gives one of her most powerful vocal performances on this song, and it deserved to become the hit it became and should get more respects than it actually has. Next comes my absolute favorite Heart song. “Secret” is a heartwrenching ballad filled with magnificent keyboard flourishes, a strong Ann vocal and great acoustic guitar work by Nancy. The next track, “Tall Dark Handsome Stranger” is a forceful rocker with sexy, seductive lyrics and a sultry vocal. “I Didn’t Want To Need You” is a midtempo number, not exactly a ballad but not a rocker either. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album. The keyboards on this song are fantastic.”

6. Bad Animals (1987)

“Two great albums in a row from Heart! This album is hard, it’s edgy – it’s Ann Wilson at her absolute best – her vocals would never again be this powerful, this emotional, this heart-wrenchingly good…I don’t remember how this album was received by the critics, but to me was an absolute knock-out, all the way through, track after track…if you are a fan of female vocals, listen to “Wait for an Answer” – Ann’s voice on this track is unparalleled…other songs that were also noteworthy are “You Ain’t So Tough”, “Easy Target” and “Alone”. Great album I still listen to frequently, and two great albums back to back for Heart!”

5. Bebe Le Strange (1980)

“ilson Sisters Rock Heaven Down with another winning effort. Great hits on this work and some great non hits as well, for the Heart aficionado. Enjoy Ann and Nancy trying to Even It Up with this excursion into the arly 80s.”

4. Heart (1985)

“One of my favourite albums of the 80’s that still rocks with brilliant songs well written produced and performed with great vocals. A classic that stands the test of time.”

3. Dog & Butterfly (1978)

“”Dog and Butterfly” is such a dreamy song that takes me away from the stress of the day and reminds me of an old love. I’m pretty sure that is what this song is about. But my favorite is the little known “Nada One” sung by Nancy. Nancy didn’t get the kudos for her singing like her sister, perhaps it was because her voice is not as strong as her sister’s but she still can sing and she sings this one with a lot of heart and soul. Really listen to it. Mistral Wind, another ballad that shows how versital these women are in their singing, song writting and just general muscianship. “

2. Little Queen (1977)

“This one is my personal Heart favorite. I’ve been listening to it now for about 27 years and it still sounds just as good as it did when I was in High School. Great rock and roll fronted by a woman with a piercingly strong voice and another with grade A guitar chops. My favorite songs on this disc are “Barracuda”, “Love Alive”, “Dream of the Archer”, and “Kick it Out”- but others like “Say Hello”, “Cry to Me/Go on Cry”, and “Treat Me Well” are classic Heart with great arrangements and creativity.”

1. Dreamboat Annie (1976)

“Dreamboat Annie is one of my all time favorite albums. I always think of it as a concept album like Captain Beyond, Wishbone Ash’s Argus, and The Eagles Desperado. This is another of the many albums that I’ve owned on all the different media types available since the 1970’s when it debuted. I will always remember listening to it when I would feel homesick for the west coast while living overseas the Pacific Ocean waves crashing in the background that set the theme for this album could take me to my “happy place”.”
