Edward Joseph Mahoney was born into a large family of Irish Catholics in Brooklyn. His parents were Dorothy Elizabeth (née Keller), a homemaker, and Daniel Patrick Mahoney, a police officer. He grew up in Levittown, New York, on Long Island, but also spent some teenage years in Woodhaven, Queens. Money was a street singer since the age of 11. As a teenager, he played in rock bands, in part to get dates from cheerleaders. He was thrown out of one high school for forging a report card. In 1967, he graduated from Island Trees High School. Money became a regular performer at clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area. After gaining the attention of Bill Graham, he secured a recording contract with Columbia Records, releasing his debut album in 1977. He charted with singles such as “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise”, about visiting his girlfriend despite not having money. In 1978, Money opened for Santana at Boston’s Music Hall. The following year, he sang the bridge section on “I’m Alright”, a song written and performed by Kenny Loggins. In 2014, Money claimed that Loggins had never given him credit for his contribution.Money’s career began to decline following an unsuccessful 1983 album (Where’s the Party?) and struggles with drug addiction. However, he made a comeback in 1986 with the album Can’t Hold Back, which received a music recording certification of platinum. “Take Me Home Tonight”, a single from the album, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. Money only agreed to perform the song—which included a line from “Be My Baby”, a song Ronnie Spector performed as part of The Ronettes—after Spector agreed to sing the line herself. In 1987, Money was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for “Take Me Home Tonight”. “I Wanna Go Back” and “Endless Nights”—two other singles from the Can’t Hold Back album—peaked at No. 14 and No. 21, respectively. In 1988, Money released Nothing to Lose, which featured the Top 10 hit “Walk on Water” and the Top 40 hit “The Love in Your Eyes”. Here are all of Eddie Money’s albums ranked.

10. Love and Money (1995)
“If you are a Eddie Money fan and looking for other tunes the the classics, this is good to fill the void. several songs are R&B influenced and many are just that – love songs. still like to have cds when you can’t get wifi out in the wilderness or traveling through canyons on roadtrips”
9. Ready Eddie (1999)
“Oh man! This album just kicks! I saw Eddie in concert several years ago and this album sounds like a studio version of a live concert. It just grabs you with an in-your-face rock opener and just doesn’t let go! Eddie slows the pace down a bit with some cool power ballads, then fires up the band again for a hard rockin’ finale! I could’ve sworn I was back at the concert again! Thanks, Eddie, for keeping rock alive. I thought it was gone for good.”
8. Nothing to Lose (1988)
“This ’88 album is very similar in style to it’s predecessor & contains a few big hits. The biggest hit was the rock anthem – “Walk on Water” which was a memorable song & still gets radio airplay even to this day. It even reached #9 on the charts & was the last time Eddie reached the top 10. “The Love in Your Eyes” was the 2nd single & is a catchy mid tempo pop song with great keyboards & a nice chorus. Last, but not least, was one of my fav’s on the album – “Let Me In” which is much different sounding from other Money songs i’ve heard. It has kind of a tough Funk/R&B sound to it with cool rhythm guitar, a decent rap/vocals by Eddie & some great b/g vocals by the Waters’ family. “

7. Where’s the Party? (1983)
“‘Probably my favorite of Eddie’s. Not sure why it did not make it as big as the one before and after it. It is Eddie’s party cd. In fact, great liner notes inside tell the story of it and it sounds like Eddie was doing some real partying around this time. I really love every song on this one except Backtrack which is a slow bluesy number. The first two tracks Maybe Tomorrow and Bad Girls are great party tracks. Then comes Club Michelle which is probably my favorite track ever by Eddie. Nice dance track, in fact I got a long play single with the dance remix which I wish was on here as a bonus. He says in the liner notes that he gets requests all the time to play it in concert. Eddie play it!”
6. Right Here (1991)
” Honestly, I thought this album would be mediocre because it is relatively far removed from Eddie Money’s most prolific eras (late 70s to late 80s). However, I must give this guy credit for being able to produce a rock-solid album. It was apparent to me almost right away that a strong effort went into this album with my personal favs being, “Run Right Back”, “Fire And Water”, “Prove It Every Night”. All three of these songs have some fantastic riffs and guitar work.”
5. Playing for Keeps (1980)
“Eddie’s 1980 release that didn’t get a lot of accolades, but certainly deserved them. There are many hidden gems on this one. The guitar playing alone is worth the price. Eddie’s vocals reach gritty and breezy peaks as he pours out his rockin’ style on each track.”

4. Life for the Taking (1979)
“As someone who has long appreciated that the best songs from any artist are almost always not the “three minute catchy singles” chosen to be released by the record company, this is the second best studio album Eddie released. It is second only to Nothing To Lose which opens with Walk On Water and gets even better before ending with the sensational Dancing With Mr Jitters. I feel like the sound is a bit more polished and cleaner than his first album but Eddie still sings with his own raw style before the record company turned him into a “pop star” rather than a “rock star”. While Life For The Taking and Gimme Some Water are excellent songs, I find Rock And Roll The Place becomes redundant in the same way I Wanna Be A Rock n Roll Star is on the first album.”
3. Can’t Hold Back (1986)
“Absolute standout, his best work and masterpiece. After struggling with some personal problems Eddie was back with two killer tracks ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ and ‘I Wanna Go Back”. The rest of the album isn’t worse, ‘Endless Nights’ was another single that just missed American Top 20. Essentially every track is strong and there is no fillers. Good job.”
2. Eddie Money (1977)
“I saw Eddie Money perform on Saturday Night Live and went out and bought this album the next day. For some reason it’s one of those albums I never get tired of. Standout tracks include “Two Tickets To Paradise”,You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” and ” Baby Hold On”. Eddie never ever came even close to this again.”
1. No Control (1983)
“1981 was a troubled year at first for Eddie, in late ’81 Eddie O.D. after sniffing laundry deterergent he mistook for cocaine. Eddie recovered and tried putting his party life behind him. Mid ’82 brought us his 4th album the CLASSIC “No Control” #20, this album rocked from the get go and the band was in fine form here after the lackluster “Playing For Keeps”. The rockers included, “Shakin'”, #63 hot 100, #9 mainstream rock, The title track which hit #60 mainstream rock, “Take A Little Bit”, “Keep My Motor Running”, the pulsive “Drivin’ Me Crazy”, and the real charmer was the big hit “Think I’m In Love”, #16 hot 100 and #1 mainstream rock, still a classic 29 years on.”
