Europe ’72 (Grateful Dead Album) Live
Europe ’72 is a live triple album by the Grateful Dead, released in November 1972. It covers the band’s tour of Western Europe in April and May that year, and showcases live favorites, extended improvisations and several new songs including “Jack Straw” and “Brown Eyed Women”. The album was the first to include pianist Keith Godchaux and his wife, Donna Jean Godchaux, and the last to feature founding member Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who died shortly after its release. It was one of the first triple-record rock albums to be certified goldby RIAA; the album has since been certified double platinum.

“For what would become one of the most spectacular and highly admired live rock albums in
music history, The Grateful Dead gave their European fans the live concert experience the
were expecting when The Grateful Dead toured Europe in 1972 which is highly documented
with it’s sweeping scope and high energetic force on this historic live album. Released later
that year and already remastered in complete form, Europe ’72 presents a fresh document
on The Dead’s first extended European Tour which have not only impressed the critics and
fascinated the rock circuit, but it also features a unique set of previous material from 1967
to 1971 along with new material. Sporadically recorded live to SRO crowds in England, Paris,
(West) Germany, Amsterdam and Denmark, the live extravaganza feature new tracks, such
as Ramblin’ On Rose, Jack Straw, Looks Like Rain, Tennessee Jed and He’s Gone, alongside
old tracks, like Caution (Do Not Stop On The Tracks), Morning Dew, Sugar Magnolia and Big
Railroad Blues, to whom the band plays, which makes up half the performance. What is so
ironic about it is that it feature an array of challenging performances including Epilogue (an
instrumental improvisation), You Win Again, I Know You Rider–their take on Easy Rider that
extends Jerry Garcia’s solo into a virtuoso guitar performances; their 13-minute live take on
Truckin’, The Dead’s signature hit; Epilogue and two superb live jam versions of The Young
Rascal’s Good Lovin’ (one is 20 minutes long).”
