For All Kings Songs Ranked

For All Kings is the eleventh studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax, released on February 26, 2016. It is the band’s first studio album to feature Jon Donais on lead guitar, replacing Rob Caggiano. The album artwork was designed by Alex Ross. Explaining the album title, which is also the title of the album’s third track, Ian said: “The meaning, to me, for this title is that everybody can be a king. Everybody can have control over their own lives, control over their destiny, just by growing up and becoming a responsible human being. I’m not necessarily saying that being a “king” is being the boss in your relationship, or any relationship for that matter. A king of yourself is what I mean. Taking responsibility and ownership for your own shit is basically what it means to me.” Ian, who writes the band’s lyrics, said he tried to incorporate different structural ideas for the lyrics to those featured on previous albums, crediting author David Mitchell as an influence. Here are all of For All Kings songs ranked.

10. This Battle Chose Us

“This Battle Chose Us!” which features a fantastic first half of heavy, yet melodic metal goodness that wouldn’t sound out of place on either “Spreading the Disease” or “Sound of White Noise”. The first half features a killer, grumbling bass intro, along with some juicy, meaty, crunchy melodic riffage and leads, catchy, mid-paced drumming, and excellent, soaring, melodic sung vocals from Belladonna, and another great chorus to boot.”

9. Suzerain

“Suzerain” which is a massively heavy groove driven number that just kicks the listener in the teeth with a relentless barrage of blistering, machine-gun-like riffing and double bass onslaughts, and clanging bass lines, and also features another amazingly memorable and melodic chorus, and Donais also uncorks another great, winding, shredding solo for good measure too.”

8. Defend Avenge

“Defend/Avenge” is an deliciously addictive groove-oriented thrash anthem that contains catchy, barking, shout-a-long choruses that evoke the band’s “Among The Living” days, along with joyous, crunching, pummeling riffs and bass lines throughout that just pound the listener straight down to the ground with authority.”

7. For All Kings

“For All Kings” on the other hand, is an excellent up-tempo thrasher that is anchored by a viciously menacing main riff, along with hefty, pounding thuds, plus another winding, ripping, melodic solo, and an addictingly dramatic chorus to top it all off.”

6. Monster at the End

“Monster at the End” meanwhile opts for a more mid-paced approach, and is highlighted by another amazingly addictive, melodic sung chorus, and also boasts tight, heavy, pounding yet restrained riffing, along with ringing, humming bass work, and also features a wicked, winding, shredding solo to boot”

5. Zero Tolerance

“Zero Tolerance” which is another one of my favorites here, and the album’s closing cut, and such a perfect way to close things out. This song is just an absolute major scorcher, and is also now another one of my favorite Anthrax songs as well. The song is heavily anchored by a furious, non-stop onslaught of fiery, scorching, frenzied thrash induced riffing, rapid, pounding double-kick thuds, and fierce, aggressive vocals, and is also highlighted by a viciously fiery, rapid, ripping solo from Donais near the end that tops it all off.”

4. Evil Twin

“Evil Twin” which is another excellent, straight-ahead thrasher which boasts blistering, chuggy, thrashing riffs and leads, heavy, deft, and pounding thuds, and mean, rumbling bass lines that bubble beneath the surface of the thrashing guitars, and also included are another awesomely blazing, shredding guitar solo, and a mean sounding chorus as well.”

3. Blood Eagle Wings

“Blood Eagle Wings” which is the longest song on the album, clocking nearly at 8 minutes long. The first half of the song is melodic, and slow-paced, featuring a nice, splendid electro-acoustic intro, along with slow, yet pounding, mouthwatering, and melodic riffing, pounding bass lines, and brilliantly melodic sung vocals, and the second half is much more upbeat, yet melodic, boasting great double-kick drums, and a jaw-droppingly amazing, winding, shredding, melodic solo section that just make your jaw drop.”

2. You Gotta Believe

“The song is also highlighted by a perfectly nice, restrained melodic breakdown midway through that contains some clear, pristine, melodic lead guitar work, and catchy, melodic bass lines, only pick things up once again with a deliciously blazing, ripping, ear-shredding guitar solo from Donais afterwards.”

1. Breathing Lightning

“Breathing Lightning” (which is my personal highlight here) which is a very melodic and uplifting song that begins with a soft, and beautifully atmospheric acoustic intro before blasting off into an attack of wickedly heavy, chunky, yet melodic riffage, rumbling bass lines, and thumping beats, all lead by Belladonna’s outstanding and soaring melodic vocal deliveries, and is also highlighted by yet another memorable and wonderful melodic sung chorus, and an awesomely winding, and blistering, melody drenched solo from Donais as well.”
