Freeways Songs Ranked

Freeways is the sixth studio album by Canadian rock band Bachman–Turner Overdrive, released in 1977. It was the last album that Randy Bachman would be a part of with BTO until seven years later when a “reunion” Bachman-Turner Overdrive studio album was made and released in 1984. This is also the last studio album to be made with the band’s classic and most successful Not Fragile line up. It was the first BTO studio album to become a commercial failure, featuring the first BTO single that did not chart (“My Wheels Won’t Turn”). Randy Bachman wrote every song besides “Life Still Goes On”, while only two of the album’s eight songs featured Fred Turner as the lead vocalist. This album was one of the last albums to reach the charts by any formation of BTO. The 8-track tape version of this album has the distinction of being one of the few 8-tracks that is arranged exactly like the album, with no song breaks. Here are all of Freeways songs ranked.

8. Can We All Come Together

“This opening song seems so unlike Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s kind of music.. It almost seems like a slow disco song, in a way. It does have a nice & cheerful message to it, & it seems to be a decent song to listen to.”

7. Shotgun Rider

“The rest of Side One is more straightforward and contains the strongest track on the album in the form of “Shotgun Rider” which, despite a couple of gimmicks, has the kind of appeal that spans the divide between rock and new wave.”

6. My Wheels Won’t Turn

“The only track which recalls past glories is the bass-driven “My Wheels Won’t Turn” which actually provides either Bachman or Blair Thornton the chance to open up and play guitar. But even this is a compromise, like saying Buddy Holly’s “Bo Diddley” was heavy when compared to “True Love Ways” – it’s all a question of degree.”

5. Easy Groove

“This is one of this album’s most easy going songs. I always liked that one verse “Keep It Smooth, With An Easy Groove”…so suitable for slow dancing. I like this song & it’s really cheerful & fun to listen to.”

4. Life Still Goes On (I’m Lonely)

“Life Still Goes On (I’m Lonely)”…This song is one of this album’s HIGHLIGHTS. It is also the shortest song & I wished it was LONGER than what it actually is. This song is EXCELLENT & it’s one of my favorites.”

3. Just for You

“Just For You”…I like this song, it’s pretty good actually. It is SIMILAR to their EARLIER hits “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” & also “Hey You”, musically & ALSO because of the STUTTERING vocal. I was always surprised that “Just For You” WASN’T an actual hit, due to it’s similarity, of these OTHER two songs.”

2. Down, Down

“Down, Down”…Another of this album’s HIGHLIGHTS. This is another of my FAVORITES songs, on this album. It’s not the most uplifting song, though. And it is very HAUNTING & not easily forgotten, from memory. It’s another EXCELLENT song, in my opinion.

1. Freeways

“Freeways”…This TITLE song & album closer is the biggest HIGHLIGHT on this ENTIRE album. It is also my TOP favorite song. It is also extremely POWERFUL musically, beat-wise & it has STRONG vocals by C.F. Turner. This song is so HAUNTING & it STILL gives me the chills every time I hear this track. And I might as well say that “Freeways” is also an EXCELLENT song.”
