From The Original Master Tapes Songs Ranked

MCA got serious about reissuing vintage music from its library in the 1980s, when it put the responsibility in the hands of producer Steve Hoffman, who was willing to spend the time and do the research required to find the right masters and also to propose doing right by them. One of the first results was For the First Time Anywhere, which unearthed a lot of previously unheard undubbed Holly demos, and Hoffman followed it up two years later with From the Original Master Tapes, the first Buddy Holly collection that was a revelation for its sound quality. Although it has been outdone in that department since, what with the advancement of digital technology and its uses, and there are compilations that take into account songs of his that became important in others’ hands, this remains the best single-disc collection of Buddy Holly’s music, featuring 20 of his biggest hits. Here are all of From The Original Master Tapes songs ranked.

10. True Love Ways

“Don’t you love the sound of the 60’s. I love the Beatles songs, those 2.5 to 3.5 minutes Rock songs that keep you wanting for more. I think that’s where the magic is, hook, line and sinker, you fall for the catchy beat and remain hungry for more.”

9. Heartbeat

“Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic Bruce Eder as “the single most influential creative force in early rock & roll.” His works and innovations were copied by his contemporaries and later musicians, notably The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and exerted a profound influence on popular music.”

8. Listen to Me

“Buddy is one of the first musicians I ever heard and I was lucky there as it could have been someone who didn’t write his own timeless songs , have an extremely distinctive guitar style and create pictures in the listener’s mind .”

7. Rave On

“This is great to listen to. After having the pleasure of attending a magnificent local stage rendition of The Buddy Holly Story, and never realizing how good Holly was, I bought this CD and was glad I did. Now I am turning on my kids to music so good it is painful to think how many great songs we have missed out on due to Buddy’s untimely death.”

6. I’m Gonna Love You Too

“This is a cheap Buddy Holly CD but has all of the hits on it sounding as good as ever. If you are a die-hard Buddy Holly fan then you may want more than just this, but this has all that you need from Buddy Holly including most if not all of his hits and songs.”

5. I’m Lookin’ for Someone to Love

“During Buddy Holly’s brief career, he recorded many songs which are now regarded as rock and roll classics. Every song on this CD is great. The only thing wrong with this album is that it doesn’t include more songs. I highly recommend this CD.”

2. Not Fade Away

“Innocent. That’s the only way to describe these 20 slices of old school rock’n’roll. Buddy Holly sure had a touch like no one else at that time – bar maybe Chuck Berry – and not many has matched his output since. I hear echoes of this in The Beatles (their first records), Springsteen (_ The River _) and even the White Stripes of 2003. In between are millions of other people who love and sound like Buddy Holly. Talk about a legacy!”

1. That’ll Be the Day

“This one spectacular Buddy Holly and The Cricketts 45rpm that I’ve had in my collection for fifty nine years. Holy Crap! This goes about as far back as rock and roll goes and one of the first vinyl disc I ever accrued. The lyrics of sideA is what most folks know but I loved the guitar from Mr. Holly.”
