The Buddy Holly Collection Songs Ranked

Memorial Collection is a 2009 compilation album of American singer–songwriter and rock and roll pioneer Buddy Holly’s master takes and hit singles, including some rare recordings. Along with Down the Line: Rarities, this album was released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Holly’s death (February 3, 1959). In an interview with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Holly’s eldest brother Larry Holley commented before hearing both this compilation and Down the Line: Rarities, “María [Elena Holly] told me I was definitely going to just break down and cry when I hear all these CDs, because they’ve cleaned them (the songs) all up and Buddy’s music never has come across so pure before.” Here are all of The Buddy Holly Collection songs ranked.

6. Think It Over

“Buddy Holly’s influence on rock ‘n’ roll cannot be measured by chart success (he had only three top ten singles) nor by a lengthy recording career (only three years: his first Decca single “Blue Days” was recorded April 1956 and his final New York apartment recordings were done January 1959–days before the fatal Feb. 3 plane crash).”

5. Fool’s Paradise

“My other music reviews span lots of styles, and I’m a death metal fan, so it weirds out the people in the office when Buddy Holly gets two hours of airplay. Too bad folks, this is the first real rocker in history.”

1. Brown Eyed Handsome Man

“Where to start with this one…well I guess the best way to put it is this compilation effectively shows off Buddy’s singing talents and songwriting talents. There are so many gems here, I don’t know where to start. This album lasted me so long, just listening to it on shuffle on and off for almost an entire summer. This is, imo the best place to start with Buddy.”
