Going Back Songs Ranked
Going Back is the eighth and most recent solo studio album by English musician Phil Collins. It was released on 13 September 2010 in the United Kingdom and 28 September 2010 in the United States, and features covers of ’60s Motown and soul standards. It also was his first full solo release in eight years, Collins having primarily concentrated on soundtracks, compilations, and his extensive touring as a solo artist and with Genesis. It is also the second album to be solely produced by Collins. Collins indicated in interviews that Going Back would most likely be his final project and that he was considering retirement from music permanently. This was confirmed in 2011, but 4 years later, in October 2015, Collins announced that he had come out of retirement. A 2-disc reissue of the album entitled The Essential Going Back with an altered track list and live songs was released on 10 June 2016. Here are all of Going Back songs ranked.

10. Jimmy Mack
“It’s closer than you can say about this new work from Phil Collins! At the first minute I felt something strange in the sound, expect a crystal clear sound, like all their albums, and felt some distortions that additional time be perceived as equal to the original arrangements! It was somewhat surprising, because only someone with the expertise of Phil could pull that off!”
9. Going to a Go-Go
“I was absolutely amazed when I heard the albums songs earlier this year and I thought it was going to be a better album, and I really was right. I absolutely recommend this album as a nice buy for die hard Phil Collins fans’, or for anyone who desires the classic authentic days of what soul music sounded like back in the 60’s and 50’s. Phil proved he was going back, and did it well.”
8. Uptight (Everything’s Alright)
“Today’s generation may only have heard a few of these, although they would greatly benefit from hearing all the rest. A few of the musicians that recorded these songs on this album actually were there for the original recordings of most of the songs. So, that was pretty cool.”

7. (Love Is Like a) Heatwave
“I’m a long time fan of Phil, Pete and Genesis, and when I first heard of this, I was disappointed. But, it really takes me back to Phil’s first two albums–there’s such energy and spark in the whole thing, the songs are all wonderful, the playing is fantastic–and the production tries to mimic each song’s original production. “
6. Take Me in Your Arms
“He does an excellent take on “Take Me In Your Arms” (which had been previously done by The Isley Brothers and more famously The Doobie Brothers in 1975). The songs are great and so are his interpretations! Definitely a remarkable cd!”
5. Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer
“very track feels like you’re actually feeling that classic era well. Some of those songs also click through Phil well, which inspired him to make some of his classic hits during his solo greats era in the 80’s like Two Hearts (Buster Soundtrack, 1988) and If Leavin’ You Is Easy (Face Value, 1981.) I was absolutely amazed at the sound, it feels like a great trip down memory lane classic days of Malt Shops & 50’s sock hop dances.”

4. Blame It on the Sun
“Going Back is hands down Phil’s finest solo project since Dance Into the Light. His voice is in its finest form in years and his drumming is stellar despite his physical health issues and if this is his last solo album he releases, he is going out with a bang!”
3. Papa Was a Rolling Stone
“These songs, chosen by Phil Collins, are his favorites he listened to when he was growing up. They obviously left a huge impression on him – as we are the recipients of his excellent songs over the years that are very R&B driven.”
2. Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)
“Phil chose his covers wisely and very well. First Motown group he covers is The Temptations and are well represented by Phil’s excellent covers of “Girl (Why You Want to Make Me Blue)”
1. Standing in the Shadows of Love
“My first impression as I listened to the beginning of this cd- was “is this really phil?” He sounds different-not his usual style. However I can assure you-it really grows on you! It IS different! Phil Collins is taking us back to his youth (mine too actually) and revisiting it his way! “
