Gorilla Songs Ranked

Gorilla is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter James Taylor. Released in May 1975, it was more successful than Walking Man, his previous release. Two album tracks released as singles, “Mexico” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, rose to the top five on the Billboard charts. This would be Taylor’s second-to-last album of new material for Warner Bros. Records, his last being In the Pocket. In many ways, Gorilla showcased Taylor’s electric, lighter side that became evident on Walking Man. The song “Sarah Maria” is about his daughter Sally (born Sarah Maria Taylor on January 7, 1974). His then-wife Carly Simon was featured on “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, originally recorded by Marvin Gaye. Jimmy Buffett recorded “Mexico” on his 1995 album Barometer Soup and performed “Lighthouse” during his Salty Piece of Land tour of 2005. Here are all of Gorilla songs ranked.

8. Mexico

“Right from the opening bars of “Mexico” the clarity is incredible – you can suddenly hear all the instruments. This one is nice and I love Mexico,It seems to me that Taylor is one of those artists who when down and depressed, does better work. His guitar work gets so lost in his later work.”

7. How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)

“Taylor.has settled into a comfortable groove., and his. albums reflect his. maturing. perspective in his songwriting, and his choices of cover songs.and though the formula. repeats itself on this and future albums. released. they. sound trite or phoned inn. The material has aged as gracefully as James himself.”

“Gorilla’ is so meaningful. He creates a magnificent analogy, masterfully done given how similar we are to Gorillas. He simply bridges the gap from Gorilla to us through a journey of the heart.”

4. Angry Blues

“Angry Blues” gets much of the same flavor;another of Taylor’s by now patented funky takes on the blues. The singer-songwriter style has gone in and out of fasion over the years. And one of it’s trademarks is being a kind of folk music that takes influences from popular styles around it:in the 80’s it might be a slight new wave touch, the 90’s might show the influence of alternative rock and of course you have the ambient styles of singer-songwriter pop today.”

3. Sarah Maria

“Gorilla is accomplished but relaxed, polished but sensual, sophisticated but almost painfully human. Gorilla is a slice of West Coast paradise. Come as you are and bring your own Margaritas.”

2. Love Songs

“In this period of JT’s creativity he was surrounded by a busy and fulfilling musical landscape where Philly Soul,Motown, funk and country rock were all over the charts, the radio and record players across the nation and he was more then willing to harness all of this into his own signiture sound. It influeced the whole world of singer-songwriter pop after it and is a must have if you love great pop songwriting and musicianship.”

1. Lighthouse

“No one sings quite like Taylor, and it is a wonderful album to have playing as you are working your way through a quiet Saturday at home, reading or doing chores or kicking back with a Sam Adams and a few friends. Come on back to a better time, friend; sit on down with us and listen a while. This is vintage James Taylor.”
