Greatest Hits Songs Ranked

There have been many Huey Lewis & the News hits compilations released overseas, but 2006’s simply named Greatest Hits is only the second U.S. comp, following Time Flies, which appeared a decade earlier. At a generous 21 tracks, Greatest Hits is not only five songs longer than Time Flies, but it’s a better-chosen collection, too. It may be missing “Bad Is Bad,” but it has a stronger selection of early songs, like the wonderful “Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do,” plus a better selection of latter-day songs, including Huey’s duet with Gwyneth Paltrow on Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’.” That doesn’t mean the disc is perfect, however — although this does have a stronger representation of their earlier material, it could use just a little bit more, and the non-chronological sequencing is a bit of a headache. That said, this has all the hits and no weak songs, making it the best Huey Lewis & the News compilation yet. [It’s even better in the CD/DVD version, which contains a DVD with nine videos, including an original edit of “Doing It All for My Baby,” a long version of “The Power of Love,” and a previously unreleased version of “Do You Believe in Love.”] Here are all of Greatest Hits songs ranked.

8. Hip to Be Square

“As I try to fill my iPod with songs I know and love, I also get the chance to listen again to my favorite music. This music will always help define my memories in a way few things will.”

7. Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do

“Well, its about time they put Huey Lewis’ videos on DVD. What’s even better is its a set with his greatest hits on CD in a jewel case instead of putting in in a larger DVD case. I wish they’d do that more often, it saves space. Unlike some compilations that drop one of your favorite songs, these are all his greatest hits on CD and his greatest videos.”

6. Trouble in Paradise

“On this CD the only song from Huey’s first album is the live version of Trouble In Paradise. Trust me, the live version is better than the studio version. It seemed Huey’s first album was a bit faster tempo all the way around then his subsequent albums and it may be why the first album was a minor selling album.”

5. Heart and Soul

“Love all of these old songs and videos!! They were always such a fun group of guys. It doesn’t bother me that the videos aren’t high quality. It made me very happy just to see them again.”

4. If This Is It

“This Combo is just great. I can listen to the music on my cd player and later watch it on my tv. They are an amazing and funny band. The collection on this combo is the best of their hits.”

3. Stuck with You

“Huey Lewis & The News were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s’, with a string of classic hits that still get heavy airplay today. Over the years, the band has been anthologized several times, but none of these compilations have gotten it right.”

2. The Power of Love

“One of the things that contributed to their success was their fun-spirited music videos, which showcase the band’s wonderful sense of humor throughout. “

1. The Heart of Rock & Roll

“If you’re looking for an album with all of Huey’s “hits” and popular releases, this is it. It also comes with a DVD containing several videos of their hit songs. I loved it. I highly recommend this product if you’re looking for a good compilation CD of Huey’s hit songs AND Huey videos.”
