INTERVIEW: Reetoxa discusses origins and influences alongside new single ‘Timor Leste’

Melbourne-based project Reetoxa has built its musical identity around emotionally charged storytelling, combining rock, dramatic pop and cinematic arrangements with songwriter Jason McKee’s deeply personal experiences. Drawing inspiration from artists including Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and Pearl Jam, the project brings together accomplished musicians with backgrounds spanning Jet, Robbie Williams’ band and Men at Work.

Latest single ‘Timor Leste’ takes McKee back twenty years to his deployment aboard HMAS Manoora with the Royal Australian Navy in 2006. Exploring the psychological aftermath of conflict, the song transforms memories of fear, uncertainty and military service into an expansive musical narrative, including the haunting recollection of hearing birds sing again after the violence had subsided.

With an ambitious 22-track double album planned for early 2027, we caught up with Jason McKee of Reetoxa to discuss the memories behind ‘Timor Leste’, processing his military experiences through songwriting, bringing the track’s cinematic arrangement to life and the creative ambitions driving Reetoxa’s forthcoming album.

What was the first rock song or artist that made an impact on you?

I grew up with the Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys and many others but the first bands of my generation to excite me were Faith No More and Nirvana.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences within the rock genre?

Nirvana, Pixies, Pearl Jam and Radiohead are my heroes. I have also started listening to Aussie song writers Bee Gees and Ross Wilson.

Are there any non-rock musicians or genres that have also influenced your music?

I love female artists such as Eric Dunn, Beth Orton etc, Nick Drake as well.

What is your main inspiration when looking to write new music?

I love being creative and songs just pop into my head. I can’t stop them if I try. Now Reetoxa is always looking out for my next song.

What do you enjoy most about performing live and do you have any memorable live performance experiences you’d like to share?

My live performance was at a packed penny black in Brunswick.  It was amazing for my confidence.  Hopefully we will do a full tour next year.

What has been a particularly rewarding moment in your musical journey so far?

Meeting my producer Simon Moro has changed my life, I met him at a how to record in pro tools course.  I decided I’d just hire him. I felt so connected.

How would you define success as a musician?

Getting your music on streaming services is a huge step but nothing beats holding your own vinyl.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are just starting out?

Release that song.  You won’t believe the people in the world listening.
