Jimi Hendrix Studio Albums Ranked

Jimi Hendrix was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His mainstream career lasted only four years, but he is widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in history and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as “the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music”. Hendrix was inspired by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and he was instrumental in popularizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He was also one of the first guitarists to make extensive use of tone-altering effects units in mainstream rock, such as fuzz tone, Octavia, wah-wah, and Uni-Vibe. He was the first musician to use stereophonic phasing effects in recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone writes: “Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began. Here are Jimi Hendrix’s three studio albums ranked.

3. Axis: Bold as Love (1967)

“…So now you can finally hear this Hendrix masterpiece in all its glory…!! I don’t spend all that much time writing reviews, however this one is so spectacular and really done right that I felt it was important to get the word out. I was getting the chills quite a bit on my first listen, crazy good..! Listen to the bell hits in “Little Wing” and you will hear a clarity and detail that has never been revealed before…The mono mixes are also a nice plus… This remastered sacd is done extremely well, I seriously doubt you’ll ever hear this sound any better… I’ll be buying the AYE sacd without any hesitation… very easy to give this one 5 stars..!”

2. Electric Ladyland (1968)

“This album is Jimi Hendrix’s self-proclaimed Masterpiece! He claimed that every note on this record was completely intentional, every sound and effect was carefully crafted and created for the fulfillment of the work. This album is everything that Jimi was hoping to achieve. Even with the limitations of the recording
processes of the time this record is as fresh and vital today as the day it was recorded. It continues to amaze and inspire musicians all over the world. It is a foundation for experimentation and perfection of the
art of guitar playing, songwriting, and composition. In his tragically short lifetime Jimi Hendrix was incredibly prolific, leaving behind a treasure trove of outstanding and magical work with this record proving
to be his greatest achievement. I believe that this record will be alive and inspiring forever! Lary”

1. Are You Experienced (1967)

“This is a classic album. It has been a captivating musical experience ever since it first release in 1967. This has made the lists of top 100 albums and most influential debuts time and time again. In 2005, Rolling Stone ranked ‘Are You Experienced’ fifteenth on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Even the Library of Congress, in recognition of the cultural significance of this relase, added it to the National Recording Registry, allowing it to live in it’s infamy and glory.

Soon as it arrived I ripped off the plastic to get to it. I threw it on our turntable and let that thing pump in all of it’s might. You know as a music fan, the weight of the songs on this record. You know it’s impact. At full volume, you want to live in it’s analog experience.”
