L.A. Guns Songs Ranked

L.A. Guns are an American hard rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1983. Currently, there are two versions of the band. One version consists of original members Kelly Nickels (Bass, backing vocals) and Steve Riley (Drums) along with newer members Scott Griffin and Kurt Frohlich (Lead vocals and rhythm guitar). The second version of L.A. Guns consists of Tracii Guns (lead guitar), Phil Lewis (lead vocals), Ace Von Johnson (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Johnny Martin (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Scot Coogan (drums). The first incarnation of the group was formed by Tracii Guns and Rob Gardner in 1983 and merged with fellow Los Angeles group, Hollywood Rose, to form Guns N’ Roses in March 1985. After only a brief tenure in that band, Guns reformed L.A. Guns with a new lineup, consisting of Paul Black, Mick Cripps, Robert Stoddard, and Nickey Alexander. Black would soon be replaced by former Girl singer Phil Lewis while former Faster Pussycat bassist Kelly Nickels was added to the group. Later, Alexander would be replaced by former W.A.S.P. drummer Steve Riley with this being known as the “classic lineup” of L.A. Guns. They achieved moderate chart success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, the group went through numerous lineup changes (with Riley being the most consistent member) and failed to regain mainstream attention. Here are all of the LA Guns songs ranked.

15. Man In the Moon (Man In the Moon, 2001)

“Man in the Moon” is a reasonable start to the album, with Traci Guns and Mick Cripps guitars playing off each other nicely, and Steve Riley’s drumwork pounding away furiously.”

14. The Flood’s the Fault of the Rain (The Missing Peace, 2017)

“This is simply one of the best albums released by LA Guns, every track is worthy of its place on the album. The combination of Phil Lewis & Tracii Guns has to be there for me with this band & this album is them at their best”

13. Speed (The Missing Peace, 2017)

“Speed from this album is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album. Extremely grateful to have another new release from Traci/Phil together. Their writing together is far better than their work apart.”

12. Crystal Eyes (Hollywood Vampires, 1991)

“Phillip Lewis and company are fantastic on this album! “Crystal Eyes” is downright gorgeous! 1991 was a very good year for these boys! I had this album, the arrangements are cool! And the writing ability of these west coasters is good and mesmerizing!”

11. Vampire (Tales from the Strip, 2005)

“Vampire” is probably my fav right now, has a very Hollywood Vampires feel to it, love the verses and very catchy chorus. The ballad “Vampire” is a stunning display of vocalist Phil Lewis’ range and power, woven with lyrics that are impossible to ignore.”

10. I Wanna Be Your Man (Cocked & Loaded, 1989)

“The last single from the album “I Wanna Be Your Man” (not a Beatles cover) is a fitting closer for the album. The amount of LA swagger and strut on this album puts it as one of the best albums from the period.”

9. One More Reason (L.A. Guns, 1988)

“The sleazed-out One More Reason welcome’s one ‘n’ all to the wild world of L.A. Guns… where roaring Harleys, the neon night of West Hollywood, stiletto struttin’ rocker chicks and the seamy side of rock ‘n’ roll rule. The greasy, gutter dogs deliver their toxic rock ‘n’ roll via seven promo videos, along with uncensored interviews. The down ”n’ dirty One More Reason collection from the ass kickin’ L.A. Guns give you one more reason to like rock ‘n’ roll.”

8. No Mercy (L.A. Guns, 1988)

“The opener No Mercy is a good, rocking anthem. The songs all have good hooks and killer solos. This is a great 80s metal album. Any fan of 80s metal will want to add this album to their collection.”

7. Rip and Tear (Cocked & Loaded, 1989)

“Here’s an album and band that will be dismissed a lot as lame 80’s “hair metal”   by people who don’t know any better. What it really is is a great, high energy  album full of great hooks, catchy songs, great guitar playing and great vocals. It has that raw and sleazy vibe that tends to make great rock and roll.”

6. Sex Action (L.A. Guns, 1988)

“The SoCal bad boys big bangin’ “Sex Action” is a hot grinding rocker from the group’s self-titled 1988 release. Phillip Lewis chaps the action packed track with his raw vocals, while founding member Tracii Guns lays down the six string work on the infectious roller.”

5. Electric Gypsy (L.A. Guns, 1988)

“Classic sleaze style rock & roll from L.A. Guns. This cd is quite good from start to finish, and has a raw streetwise feel to it all the way through. Probably the best album in the L.A. guns catalog.”

4. It’s Over Now (Hollywood Vampires, 1991)

“This is a great song to hear anytime, especially if you are going through a break up. The song puts you in a better mood and makes you want to dance again.”

3. Never Enough (Cocked & Loaded, 1989)

“Never Enough” had a great guitar riff and an even better chorus. Phil Lewis’s voice has never sounded better especially on Never Enough’s chorus, leaves me speechless that he can sing like that.”

2. Over the Edge (Hollywood Vampires, 1991)

“Over The Edge” is a darker mid-paced song that surprised me considering the more pop metal style that much of the album is filled with. The song isn’t a good opening for an album and does drop the over all rating of the album.”

1. The Ballad of Jayne (Cocked & Loaded, 1989)

“Dedicated to the memory of the erotic and exotic Jayne Mansfield, L.A. Guns cast an acoustic ode to the curvy vixen who died tragically on June 27, 1967, in an auto accident, with “The Ballad of Jayne”. Pulled from the Cocked & Loaded LP, the compact disc track listing for the 1989 album release incorrectly notes the song title as “The Ballad of Jane” on the back sleeve. In addition, the lyrics printed in the accompanying booklet also reference “Jane”.
