LCD Soundsytem Albums Ranked

LCD Soundsystem is an American rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2002 by James Murphy, co-founder of DFA Records. The band comprises Murphy (vocals, various instruments), Nancy Whang (synthesizer, keyboards, vocals), Pat Mahoney (drums), Rayna Russom (synthesizer), Tyler Pope (bass, guitar, synthesizer), Al Doyle (guitar, synthesizer, percussion), Matt Thornley (guitar, synthesizer, percussion), and Korey Richey (synthesizer, piano, percussion). They are currently signed to both DFA and Columbia Records. After a series of rumors hinting at a possible band reunion, LCD Soundsystem released the single “Christmas Will Break Your Heart” in December 2015, making it their first single in five years. LCD Soundsystem later confirmed their reunion and announced an expanded tour, including appearances at several high-profile music festivals, as well as a new studio album. American Dream, their fourth album, was released in September 2017. It went on to become their first number-one album in the United States. The album was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards and the single “Tonite” won for Best Dance Recording. Here are all of LCD Soundsytem albums ranked.

8. London Sessions (2010)

“They’re live versions and quite well done. Very pleasant listening! The live versions are very true to the LCD Soundsystem electronic versions, but are done without the use of computers. It gives the music a little looser, little more rollicking quality and lacks the mechanical perfection of the previous editions. Don’t get me wrong. This is not a criticism. I’ve really enjoyed listening to the new live versions of these songs. I’m sure any LCD fan will feel the same way. Interesting concept here. Maybe a few other electronica acts will try their hand at it.”

7. Electric Lady Sessions (2019)

“”Electric Lady Sessions” (12 tracks; 68 min.) opens with a surprising effective cover of The Human League’s “Seconds” (from their classic “Dare!” album). And we’re off to the races! Next comes the title track of their latest album, and in fact one would expect there to be a good amount from that album, and indeed 6 of the 10 “american dream” album tracks are included here (the other 5 are “oh baby”, “i used to”, “tonite”, “call the police”, and “emotional haircut”). The rest comes from LCD’s back catalog. It all sounds great. The band is super-tight, just as they were on the London Sessions album.”

6. 45:33 (2006)

“The first track (actually 6 tracks) seems to play forever. It’s long and drawn out with many interesting variations. My interest waxes and wanes as I listen to it. When I first listened to it, I became somewhat anxious wondering what all this was leading to. On later listens, I just relaxed and let it unfold. Very, very enjoyable! It’s mostly electronic stuff, but has voices and a lot of acoustical instruments interspersed. Very nice mix. well done!”

5. The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live At Madison Square Garden (2014)

“The selection of songs is absolutely perfect: I would say it’s like a live “greatest hits” album, but one that actually includes all of the best songs, both popular and fan-favorites. I’m sure if you own or have read any reviews on “greatest hits” albums, most of the time they don’t contain all of the songs that fans think should have been included. On top of that, the concert was specifically set up to be recorded in high quality analog (1/4 inch tape) and mixed by James Murphy himself (the founder/leader of the group).”

4. LCD Soundsystem (2005)

“The overall feel of this eclectic album is of indie vocals over very well sequenced rhythms that alternate between vintage 80’s, and the best of indie 2004 (the best single year for indie music ever, in my humble opinion). Some tracks are layered with rich experimental guitars, while others let the clever, often spoken but never boring lyrics take the lead.”

3.American Dream (2017)

“AMERICAN DREAM, the album title, is a melancholic and nostalgic song. An album jacket with large ARERICAN DREAM in the blue sky sounds a little unimaginable. The sound I imagined from the jacket was an offensive sound that was fiercely ironed the American dream by the sky, but it was quite different. Slow melancholic singing vocals are felt from the desire to make dreams come true, and the godsend to the American dream that has lost not social success.”

2. This Is Happening (2010)

“Murphy presents an assortment of wonderful pop songs with excellent vocals delightfully mixed into very high quality electronica dance music. When I listen to Murphy’s music, smiles cross my face and I feel good. The music exudes a light understated humor. The man is a pop/electronica superstar, in my opinion. How long is it until he has a smash hit? “You Wanted a Hit?” he sings, well they don’t do hits he adds.”

1. Sound Of Silver (2007)

“Albums like Sound of Silver shouldn’t be made anymore. Listeners of the indie generation lost a feel a while ago for a great straight-through album, even one composed of universally well made songs. Sound of Silver, though, doesn’t remind me of other indie albums, despite its love of the modern-techno dance beats of the reinvented 80s-sound that’s permeated indie music the last few years. “
